Israeli airstrike targets home in northern Gaza

Tuesday, August 22, 2006 GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli aircraft fired two missiles at a home in a northern Gaza refugee camp late Monday, wounding two bystanders, Israeli and Palestinian officials said. The owner of the house, an activist with the Islamic Jihad militant group, was not home at the time. The owner, Hashem Asliya, 45, said he had been warned by the army shortly before the airstrike to leave the house. He said his son, Mohammed, suffered a broken leg while jumping out of the home at the time of the attack. The Israeli army confirmed the airstrikes, saying early today that it was targeting arms storage facilities. The army also confirmed that in both cases it warned residents of the buildings to leave, saying it wanted to avoid civilian casualties. Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
