CARDINALS: ARIZONA RELEASED SIX PLAYERS, UPGRADED FULLBACK JAMES HODGINS TO THE...

Tuesday, August 22, 2006 Cardinals: Arizona released six players, upgraded fullback James Hodgins to the active roster and obtained guard Brandon Gorin from the Patriots in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick. Gorin, a seventh-round draft pick of San Diego in 2001, was released by the Chargers in 2002 and signed to New England's practice squad. The team cut wide receiver Damarius Bilbo, defensive end Garrett McIntyre, quarterback Jeff Otis, center Kyle Schmitt and tight ends Alex Shor and Andy Stokes. Raiders: First-round draft pick Michael Huff will be doubtful for Friday's exhibition game because of a sprained left ankle. Huff, the No. 7 overall pick in April's draft, injured his ankle in the second quarter of Sunday night's 23-7 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. He hurt himself when he slipped on the infield dirt at the Coliseum. Bears: Chicago had both of its top two running backs, Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson, on the practice field for the first time since training camp began. Jones went through his first fully padded practice without limitation since suffering a pulled hamstring July 27, the morning of the first training camp workout. Benson returned from a shoulder sprain suffered Aug. 5 to workout in non-contact drills. Packers: Fullback William Henderson had arthroscopic knee surgery and will be out two to three weeks. Henderson injured his knee during Saturday's preseason game against Atlanta. With Henderson out, Green Bay may rely more on backup fullback Vonta Leach — though Leach dropped a sure touchdown pass Saturday. Colts: Jim Sorgi's shoulder injury may force Indianapolis to bring in a new backup quarterback. Coach Tony Dungy said Monday the team was awaiting results from Sorgi's MRI exam before deciding whether to sign another backup. Sorgi was expected to back up two-time MVP Peyton Manning for the third straight season, but he came into training camp with a sore throwing shoulder and was hit hard in each of the Colts' first two preseason games. On Sunday night against Seattle, Sorgi entered the game midway through the second quarter and lasted only three plays — a handoff to Joseph Addai, an incomplete pass intended for Aaron Moorehead and a pass that was intercepted by Mike Green and run back for a touchdown. Eagles: Philadelphia, desperate for a big running back, brought in Stephen Davis for a physical and a workout to see if the 32-year-old veteran and his creaky knees can bolster an undersized running game hit with injury and inconsistency. Davis was released by Carolina in March after finishing last season on injured reserve with knee injuries that affected his final two seasons with the Panthers. He missed all but two games in 2004 with microfracture surgery, and lost his starting spot last season to DeShaun Foster. Bills: Wide receiver Peerless Price was back on the field Monday, a day after missing practice because he misread the team's schedule. "I was going off of last Sunday's schedule when we just had meetings," Price said Monday. Price said he was at home in Buffalo on Sunday and didn't realize the Bills had an on-field session scheduled until receivers coach Tyke Tolbert reached him by phone. Panthers: Steve Smith sat out the final practice of training camp due to his strained left hamstring. Smith rode a stationary bike and did agility drills on the side of the field as the team practiced. He was injured on July 29, the first day of camp. Titans: Defensive end Antwan Odom had his right knee wrapped and wore a long brace while walking on crutches after being hurt in the first quarter Saturday night. Also, defensive end Albert Haynesworth did not practice after missing all of last week with a sore back that kept him out of the loss to Denver. He was not on the field, and coach Jeff Fisher said he was receiving treatment. Defensive tackle Jared Clauss also did not practice and wore a walking boot on his sprained left ankle. Vikings: Running back Mewelde Moore still isn't practicing because of an injured knee, and coach Brad Childress said the expected backup to Chester Taylor, was "marginal" to play against Baltimore on Friday. Ciatrick Fason has moved into Moore's spot behind Taylor. Safety Willie Offord, who sprained his wrist Saturday, practiced with a soft cast and said he would play against the Ravens.
