Sewage line breaks in Poland Township

Monday, August 21, 2006 POLAND — A 2.5-inch Browning-Ferris Industries sewage line break led to contamination of a handful of properties in the township, said Walter M. Duzzny, Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency director. A Poland Township homeowner contacted officials about a bad smell on his property about noon Sunday, Duzzny said. That call led to the discovery of the broken line on Quarry Road. The line runs from BFI's Carbon Limestone Landfill on South State Line Road in the township to the Lowellville sewage treatment plant. A truck driving over the line probably caused the break, Duzzny said. It isn't known when the break occurred or if it impacted more than the few homes in Poland, he said. Besides the county EMA, other agencies responding to the line break were the Western Reserve Joint Fire District, the county board of health and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
