Scrappers storm past Batavia, 8-1

VINDICATOR STAFF REPORT NILES — Josh Tomlin pitched six solid innings as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers snapped a three-game losing streak with an 8-1 victory over the Batavia Muckdogs Sunday at Eastwood Field. The victory moves the Scrappers (31-27) back into sole possession of first place in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League standings. Auburn, which entered the day tied with the Scrappers, had its game with State College on Sunday postponed by rain. Tomlin (6-1) allowed six hits and struck out five while giving up just one run. Relievers Derrick Loop and Mike Hernandez allowed just two hits and no runs over the final three innings. Scrappers got some help The Scrappers managed just eight hits, but were helped out by the Muckdogs with three errors, five walks and a hit batsmen. Mahoning Valley fell behind 1-0 in the third inning, but took the lead for keeps in the bottom of the fifth on four hits. Those included an RBI single by Adam Davis and a ground-rule RBI double by Jason Denham. In the sixth inning, the Scrappers scored three more, opening the inning with a pair of walks and a wild pitch before Davis had his second RBI single. Mahoning Valley closed out the scoring with two runs in the eighth, again with the help of two walks, an error and an RBI single by Evandy DeLeon. Davis had two hits to lead the attack and he and Stephen Douglas each drove in two runs. The two teams will meet in the final game of the two-game series tonight at 7:05 at Eastwood Field.
