MLB ROUNDUP Sunday's other games

Monday, August 21, 2006 AMERICAN LEAGUE Twins 7, White Sox 3 MINNEAPOLIS — Not even a painful blister on his pitching hand could derail Johan Santana. He's just been unbeatable at the Metrodome. Santana held the White Sox offense to one run in seven innings and Michael Cuddyer had two hits and two RBIs in Minnesota's victory over the White Sox, cutting Chicago's lead to one game in the AL wild-card race. Santana (15-5) hasn't lost at the Metrodome in 20 starts, dating to Aug. 6, 2005. He is 13-0 with a 2.03 ERA during that stretch. Rangers 7, Tigers 6 DETROIT — Hank Blalock hit a tiebreaking single in the sixth, Gary Matthews throw to the plate kept the lead the next inning and the Rangers held on after overcoming a six-run deficit to beat the Tigers. Josh Rupe and three more relievers slowed Detroit down after it scored six runs in the second inning against John Koronka. Texas has won nine of 11 games to stay in the AL West race. The Tigers have lost nine of 12 games, watching their 10-game lead in the AL Central shrink. Blue Jays 9, Orioles 2 BALTIMORE — Roy Halladay retired the first 16 batters in earning his major league-leading 16th win, and the Blue Jays hit three homers in a rout of the Orioles. Halladay (16-3) allowed two runs, four hits and a walk in seven innings, striking out two. The right-hander was perfect until rookie Brandon Fahey grounded a single up the middle with one out in the sixth. Troy Glaus, Bengie Molina and Reed Johnson homered for the Blue Jays, who salvaged the finale of the three-game series after losing 7-2 and 15-0. Miguel Tejada hit his 22nd homer for the Orioles, whose season-high four-game winning streak ended. Athletics 6, Royals 4 KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Nick Swisher hit a two-run home run and Kirk Saarloos survived six shaky innings for his third straight victory. The AL-West leading A's, who put closer Huston Street on the 15-day disabled list earlier Sunday, got a split of the four-game series after losing both ends of a doubleheader on Friday. They've won eight of their last 10 and their August record of 14-4 is second-best in the majors behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers. Angels 3, Mariners 2 ANAHEIM, Calif. — Chone Figgins singled home the winning run in the ninth inning and the Angels sent the Mariners to their 11th straight loss. Seattle's losing streak is its longest since September 1992, when the Mariners dropped a club-record 14 straight. All 11 losses have come on this road trip, the first winless trip of 11 or more games in the franchise's 30-year history. NATIONAL LEAGUE Marlins 4, Braves 3 MIAMI — Dontrelle Willis pitched seven innings to win for only the second time in his past eight starts, and the Florida Marlins averted a series sweep. Wes Helms, pinch hitting for Willis, tripled home the tiebreaking run in the seventh. Willis (8-10) allowed only four hits and three runs, two earned. He gave up a tying two-run homer to Jeff Francoeur in the sixth. Mets 2, Rockies 0 NEW YORK — Orlando Hernandez struck out eight in six innings and the Mets completed a three-game sweep. Hernandez (9-9) won for the fifth time in six decisions, and Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran homered for New York. Before the game, Mets left-hander Tom Glavine said his pitching shoulder is being examined for a possible blood clot, and depending on the diagnosis he could miss the rest of the season or be back on the mound next weekend. Billy Wagner pitched the ninth for his 31st save in 36 chances. Jason Jennings (7-10) allowed two runs and four hits in six innings for Colorado. Dodgers 5, Giants 2 SAN FRANCISCO — Derek Lowe allowed five hits in eight-plus innings and J.D. Drew and Nomar Garciaparra each hit two-run homers to lead Los Angeles to the win. Lowe (11-8) also had two hits and an RBI for the Dodgers, who improved to 19-3 over their last 22 games. Matt Morris (8-11) lost his fourth straight decision and the Giants lost their second straight game following a season-high five-game win streak. Takashi Saito got three outs for his 14th save in 15 chances. Astros 3, Brewers 1 MILWAUKEE — Houston's Roger Clemens struck out seven in seven innings to get his 346th career win. Clemens (5-4) gave up six hits and one run to improve to 3-0 with a no-decision in his last four starts. He allowed just one runner past second base, lowering his ERA to 2.58, and threw 80 of his 108 pitches for strikes. Milwaukee's Doug Davis (9-7) yielded three runs and three hits in six innings to lose for the first time since July 9. He was 4-0 with three no-decisions in his seven previous starts. Padres 2, Diamondbacks 1, 10 innings SAN DIEGO — Mike Cameron singled in the winning run in the 10th inning and Brian Giles had four hits for the Padres. Giles led off the 10th with a double off Brandon Medders (5-3). Josh Bard followed with a single and Ben Johnson was intentionally walked to load the bases. Cameron then lined the first pitch to left field, moving the Padres into a second-place tie with Arizona in the NL West at 62-62, four games behind first-place Los Angeles. Cardinals 5, Cubs 3 CHICAGO — Chris Carpenter pitched eight innings to win his second straight start and Chris Duncan homered for the third consecutive game for the Cardinals. Juan Encarnacion also hit a three-run homer for St. Louis. Carpenter (12-6) allowed two runs and seven hits. Jason Isringhausen allowed Aramis Ramirez's 30th homer of the season in the ninth before picking up his 30th save in 38 chances. Phillies 12, Nationals 10 PHILADELPHIA — Abraham Nunez homered and tied a career high with four RBIs for the Phillies. Nunez had three hits, Aaron Rowand went 4-for-5 and scored three times and Mike Lieberthal homered for the Phillies, who led 10-1 after four innings. Philadelphia has won two straight and remains 21/2 games back of Cincinnati in the NL wild-card race. Associated Press Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
