Jackson-Milton board found a way around the voters
EDITOR:
I have a few things to say about the Jackson-Milton school situation. First their math leaves a lot to be desired. The new school is $13.5 million and the stadium is $2.5 million. Then they say they have $23 million school construction.
When they put this on the ballot last year, we were going to lay off teachers and cut back the buses. But wait, we just found $10 million to help with the new school. Come on, we're not stupid. Twenty to 25 people have finally got what they want.
Don't bother going to the polls out here. We voted the new school down eight times, and it really doesn't matter. They are still going ahead with it anyway. Does it matter that Delphi and GM are slowing down and laying people off? No, I guess not. We are paying the teachers salaries so it doesn't matter to them.

There goes Old Cal again, whining about Democrats
EDITOR:
Once again, Calamitous Cal Thomas cries and whines in support of the Hezbollah Wing of the Republican Party.
Cal and a plethora of right-wing political pundits are sadly lamenting the Lieberman primary loss as a "catastrophic loss" to the ranks of the Dubya faithful. Cal must not be aware that the American support for the Debacle in the Desert, which I guess is Cal's primary reason for lamenting the potential loss of Lieberman in the Senate, is about 40 percent -- roughly Dubya's current job approval ratings.
The quasi-Moral Majority ranking of Cantankerous Cal and his ilk should realize one important factor: before lamenting the operations of the Democratic Party, they should be addressing the "mujahdeen" of utter chaos that Dubya has inflicted upon America and Iraq.

Consider the hidden costsof buying an old hospital
EDITOR:
As a Mahoning County taxpayer, which is more important to you? Safe bridges and highways, safe streets, effective sentencing, a county jail that isn't forced to put criminals back on the streets, or a building -- a huge building with a lot of questions?
When you purchase a home, is the cost of the house the only thing you consider? What about hidden and future costs? How is the roof? Especially a flat roof. Is the electric and plumbing updated? Is there a lien on the property? Are there back taxes owed? How much are the taxes? What is the average cost of utilities per month? What is the cost of asbestos removal? Are the cellar walls sound? Do they leak? What about maintenance? Who mows the lawn? What is the condition of the elevators? Who washes the windows, at what cost? Is the building ADA updated? What is the cost of insurance on this facility? How much do the parking guards make? What about the salary of the administrator?
Think people. Forget about the initial cost for the county to buy the former South Side Hospital. What about ongoing costs? Put it in figures you are familiar with.
Commissioners Traficanti and Ludt have seemed to have lost sight of one very important fact. They are spending my money, your money, taxpayer money. Did anyone consult you? It's your taxes and future taxes. Speak up, and loudly. Write letters, make phone calls, attend commissioner meetings, and remember this total disregard for your money and well being at the voting polls.
