Sunday, August 20, 2006 VETERANS Color guard competition CANFIELD — There will be a color guard/drill team competition for veteran and military organizations at 2 p.m. Sept. 2 at the Mahoning Veterans Memorial during the Canfield Fair. The entry fee is $10, payable at the event. Teams interested in participating may call (330) 533-1522 and leave a message, including the name of the organization and contact person and information. World War II tour The annual reunion tour of the 5th Army Veterans of the World War II Italian Campaign is May 7 to May 18, 2007. Tour visits will include Rome, Anzio, Cassino, Nettuno, Pisa, Florence, Futa Pass, Bologna, Venice and American military cemeteries. Veterans and their families interested in joining the tour should write Sy Canton at 5121 B Nesting Way, Delray Beach, Fla. 33484. PROMOTIONS Master sergeant Air Force Master Sgt. Dennis E. Riggins was promoted to his current rank while serving as a security forces craftsman assigned to the 94th Security Forces Squadron, Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Ga. The 22-year veteran is the son of Ernest Riggins of Youngstown, and brother of Gary L. Riggins of Warren. In 1979, Riggins graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, Youngstown. Navy captain Navy Capt. Catherine Anne Simpson was promoted to her current rank while serving as an administrator at Bethesda Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Md. Simpson, the daughter of William and the late Anne Simpson of Poland, graduated in 1979 from Villa Maria High School, Pa. She attended college at Youngstown State, Troy State and Georgetown universities. HONORS Army Field Band Army Master Sgt. Thomas A. Enokian is touring the country this summer as a member of the Army Field Band. The 2006 Summer Concert summer tour will include performances at in Colorado, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and New York. The Field Band, the official Army's touring musical organization, is headquartered at Fort George G. Meade, Md. The band consists of a 65-piece symphonic band and instrumental ensemble. It is accompanied by the Soldiers' Chorus, a 29-member mixed choral ensemble. Enokian, a percussion group leader with 16 years of military service, is the son of Ralph A. and Elizabeth A. Enokian of Albany, N.Y. He received a bachelor's degree in 1989 from Eastman School of Music, Rochester, N.Y. His wife, Alison, is the daughter of Rodney Murdock, and Marilyn Murdock, both of Greenville, Pa. DEPLOYED Sharon native activated Army National Guard Spec. Brent M. Davensizer has been mobilized and activated for a future deployment to an undisclosed overseas location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Davensizer, a cannon crew member with three years of military service, is normally assigned to the 213th Air Defense Battalion, Spring City, Pa. He is the son of Jamo and Ella Davensizer of Sharon, Pa., and is a 2004 graduate of Sharon High School. 910TH AIRLIFT WING Safe Seas 2006 VIENNA — The 910th Airlift Wing's aerial spray unit recently participated in a multiagency oil spill response exercise off the California coast. The exercise, called Safe Seas 2006, was conducted in the Gulf of the Farallones and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuaries in the Pacific Ocean near San Francisco, under the leadership of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in collaboration with the Coast Guard, California Office of Spill Prevention and Response, Harley Marine Services, and Department of the Interior. The 910th deployed a C-130 Hercules specially modified for aerial spray application and a dozen air and ground crew Air Force reservists to support the Safe Seas 2006 exercise. The aircraft conducted several passes spraying water to simulate a dispersant called Corexit 9500 over a simulated oil slick. ROTC Leader's Training grads Ty A. Kegarise and Patrick C. Jones have graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) 28-day Leader's Training Course at Fort Knox, Ky. Kegarise, a student at Slippery Rock University, Slippery Rock, Pa., is the son of Dann J. Kegarise and Jodie L. Kegarise, both of New Castle, Pa. He is a 2004 graduate of Union Area High School, New Castle. Jones, a student at Kent State University, is the son of Gene A. and Nancy L. Jones of Hubbard.
