Babe Ruth team wins regional
Youngstown's 15-year-olds beat Eastern Kentucky, 6-4, to advance to the World Series.
GRANGER, Ind. -- The Youngstown Babe Ruth 15-year-old all-stars are headed for Clifton Park, N.Y., for the Babe Ruth World Series from Aug. 18-27.
The Youngstown stars, who finished fifth in the 2005 14-year-old World Series, posted a 6-4 victory over Eastern Kentucky for the regional championship Tuesday.
It took two games to capture the title as Youngstown came out of the winner's bracket and lost the first game to Eastern Kentucky, 4-3.
Manager Al Franceschelli's 15-year-old stars then won the championship behind pitchers Corey Hill and Drew Hill, who combined to scatter seven hits with five strikeouts.
Jaymee Shepard singled home the winning run for Youngstown in the sixth inning. Youngstown scored three times in the second inning as Jason Bagoly and Corey Hill hit back-to-back singles and Kevin McCulloh and Shawn Roman followed with back-to-back doubles.
In the loss to Eastern Kentucky, Bagoly singled home Drew Fitzpatrick, who had singled, to give the Youngstown stars a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Eastern Kentucky, behind 2-0, scored four runs in the fourth inning, but Youngstown bounced back with a run in the top of the seventh inning.
Eastern Kentucky scored the winning run in the bottom half of the inning.
Babe Ruth 13s
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- The Youngstown Babe Ruth 13-year-old all-stars, after bouncing back in the loser's bracket to win two games Monday, lost to Kentucky, 10-3, Tuesday in the championship game of the Ohio Valley Regional.
Youngstown, which was limited to five hits by Kentucky, was led by Adam Robb with two doubles and two runs scored.
Youngstown's two wins Monday were over Indiana, 10-9, and Illinois, 8-3.
Sutton Whiting had two singles and was the winning pitcher for Youngstown against Indiana, while Josh Saverko got the save.
Robb, Brock McGivern, and Mike Lopuchovsky each had a double and single in Youngstown's 14-hit attack, while Dan Popio and Ronnie Bovo added two singles each.
Against Illinois, Robb pitched a four-hitter over the distance with five strikeouts and doubles to lead Youngstown, while Whiting had two singles.
Little League
POLAND -- The Howland 11-year-old baseball team advanced to the winner's bracket final of the state Little League tournament.
Wednesday, Howland defeated Englewood, 8-1, as Ryan Fleming fired a two-hitter with five strikeouts.
John-Mark Weissman had two hits while Brendan Cope hit a two-run homer. Mitch Bolino and Christoper Maze had singles.
Today at 11 a.m., Howland plays Dover at the field next to Dobbins Elementary School, with the winner advancing to the state final of the 10-team tournament.
