School to sponsor Internet safety seminar

BESSEMER, Pa. -- Technology and children go hand in hand today.
Often, their ability to understand advancements in technology better than their parents is a good thing. Sometimes, however, it may pose a danger.
The Mohawk Junior-Senior High School is sponsoring an Internet safety seminar at 1:30 p.m. May 7 in response to a substantial nationwide increase in Internet-related crime and inappropriate use of technology involving minors.
"Children have found a venue that they can use that their parents don't fully understand," said Raymond Omer, assistant principal for the school.
Omer said schools today wear many hats, and the district decided to reach out into the community to educate the parents on the dangers children can face on the Internet.
The seminar will include the use of parental controls on the provider's homepage, Web searches of MySpace.com, cyber-bullying and introduction to parental control software.
Lawrence County District Attorney John Bongivengo will be explaining to parents how easily accessible it is for sexual predators to access children on the Internet.
