Put pet information on emergency card

Dear Heloise: We carry an emergency card at all times with phone numbers of relatives and friends to be notified in case of an accident or death.
Recently, we were planning a day trip out of town. It occurred to us that in the event of an accident, our pets -- one dog and three cats -- might be left alone with no one to care for them. We have excellent neighbors but do not see them every day, nor do we inform them when we'll be away for a day. Such accidents can even occur during a short trip to the store, etc.
Our solution was to ask a trusted neighbor and our dog groomer for permission to place their names and phone numbers on our emergency cards with the notation & quot;for pets & quot; so we're assured that our little friends won't be forgotten or overlooked in an emergency. It is important to have emergency contacts for pets. You never do know when something might happen. Heloise

Dear Heloise: I read the hint from the person who used the nubby underside of plastic mats that protect floors to keep cats away from windows, both inside and out.
We've been doing something similar, but we use pieces of our mats to protect furniture we don't want our cats sleeping on when we're out of the house. My husband's recliner has a piece, as does the seat of the futon.
This way, the cats stay away from his chair and won't begin to claw it as a way of marking it as theirs, and the futon remains one bed in the house we can offer to guests who are allergic to cats.
I also use a piece to cover the pillow area on our own bed so our cat can't get up on my pillow in my absence. I don't mind her sleeping at the foot of the bed, but cat dander around the pillow is more than my allergies can stand. E.W.P. in Huntsville, Ala.
