PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP McDonald topples J-M on Pezzano's RBI double
Lowellville, Springfield and South Range also won Inter-County League games.
McDONALD -- McDonald junior Frank Pezzano hit an RBI double to score Joe Witkoski with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth, to carry the Blue Devils to a 4-3 win over Jackson-Milton in an Inter-County League baseball game on Friday.
Junior Steven Hughes (5-2) had two hits and also got the win in relief when he entered with the score tied, 3-3, and struck out two of the six batters he faced. David Evinsky also had two hits for the Blue Devils (11-7, 8-3).
Matt Shields had a two-run double and Ryan Clawson also doubled for Jackson-Milton, which committed three errors.
McDonald won the April 10 meeting between the teams, 11-0.
Lowellville 15, Mineral Ridge 7
LOWELLVILLE -- Ryan Gruber hit a triple, double, two singles, drove in three runs and scored twice for the Rockets (11-6, 5-4).
Vince Trevaline hit three singles and scored four times.
Springfield 13, Sebring 1
SEBRING -- The Tigers (14-4, 9-1) scored at least one run in every inning and everyone in the starting lineup had at least one hit in the Inter-County League game.
Andy Richey hit a double, three singles, scored twice, stole a base and drove in a run for the Tigers. His brother Travis hit three singles, scored once, stole a base and drove in a run. Chris Martin hit a pair of doubles.
Alan Jurica hit two singles for the Trojans.
South Range 12,Western Reserve 2
BEAVER TWP. -- Steven Bensinger allowed just five hits to lead South Range.
Tom DeChellis and Joey Leson each had three hits and scored three runs for Range (7-12, 4-5 ICL), while Joel Melnick had four RBIs and scored three runs and Chris Gause had three RBIs.
John Porterfield doubled and drove in a run for Reserve.
Wilson 5, Leetonia 3
YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior Andre Figueroa's two-run single in the third inning tied the game at 3 and senior Thomas Mulligan's hit pushed in sophomore Kevin Price with the go-ahead run in the fourth inning at Pemberton-Donnell.
Price had walked, then stole second base before going to third on a wild pitch.
Senior Kevin Newberry went 3-for-3 and Mulligan had two of Wilson's nine hits. Mulligan (2-1) got the win in relief.
Ryan Gruszecki and Trip Russell each had two hits for Leetonia.
Ursuline 13, Columbiana 1
STRUTHERS -- Eddie Rohan went 3-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice to lead Ursuline, which sent five batters to the plate in the first inning and scored five times.
Matt Yarab had two hits, two RBIs and scored three times for the Irish (13-4), while David Patrick had two hits and Paul Cene had two RBIs.
Billy Couchenour had two hits and scored a run for Columbiana (10-11), while Pat Sposato had an RBI single.
Warren JFK 3, Windham 0
WARREN -- John Baker had two singles and three RBIs to lead Warren JFK.
Pitcher Craig Dudek and sixth-inning reliever John Baker combined to pitch a three-hitter for the Eagles.
Marc Rossi contributed two singles for JFK.
Kyle Cooper threw a five-hitter for Windham in taking the loss.
Perry 5, Fitch 1
MASSILLON -- Senior Dave Diyorio (1-1) struck out eight but only two of Perry's five runs were earned as the Falcons committed five errors in a Federal League game.
Matt Ehmer went 4-for-4 for Perry (13-5, 6-2) while winning pitcher Jaren Fink (4-1) registered four strikeouts.
Junior Joe Koch had two singles for Fitch (12-5, 3-3).
Niles 13, Salem 3
NILES -- Joe Razzano had two hits and three RBIs to lead Niles in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
Kyle Pitts added two hits, two RBIs and scored twice for the Red Dragons (14-2, 6-1), while Brian Bianco and Mike Kelly also had two hits.
Ben Miller had two hits for Salem (9-9, 3-7).
Canfield 8, Campbell 4
CAMPBELL -- Eleven players batted in the six-run fifth inning for the Cardinals (12-4) as they turned back the Red Devils (4-12).
C.J. Morris and Brett Grabman each hit a double and single for Canfield. Ryan Burton hit a double, two singles and drove in two runs for the Red Devils and Rich Tisone hit a double and two singles, drove in a run and scored once.
Girard 5, Hubbard 4
GIRARD -- Girard's Mark Feist walked with the bases loaded to score Dave Sherock with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning of a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Feist, Eric Stevens and R.J. Trimbur each had two hits for the Indians.
Tom Jones and Frank Rosile each had three hits for Hubbard.
Lakeview 16, Newton Falls 10
CORTLAND -- Justin Williams had three hits with two RBIs and two runs for Lakeview (8-9, 6-4), while Mark Novotny added three hits and got the mound win.
Mark Pelyak, Brad Blevins and George Davis each had two hits for the Tigers (6-10, 3-8).
East Palestine 9, Beaver Local 3
EAST PALESTINE -- Taylor Snyder went 3-for-3, while Trent Mohney and David Baker had two hits apiece for East Palestine (14-4).
Shane Kosek had two singles for Beaver Local.
Mathews 14, Bloomfield 0
VIENNA -- Mathews' Luke Weymer threw a one-hitter over five innings, striking out eight and walking three, to get the win. Chuck Brown had three hits for Mathews (9-8, 9-2), while Phil Ciprian, Tarin Brown and John Scudier each had two hits.
Alliance 6, Southeast 3
RAVENNA -- The Aviators (13-3) scored all their runs in the first four innings, which included a 3-run first inning.
Ryan Nordquist hit a home run and single and drove in four runs for the Aviators.
Marcus Watson paced the Pirates with a double.
