GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Junior Karlie Burnell fired a complete-game three hitter with four strikeouts and freshman Kristen McConnell went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run to lead Youngstown State (17-21, 9-8 Horizon League) to a 3-1 victory over UW-Green Bay (9-19, 6-10) in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday. The Penguins lost game two, 4-3.
In the first, sophomore Becky Hibner walked and scored on McDonnell's eighth home run.
Senior Lacey Hess, who went 2-for-3, singled home Lacy Bronson to give Youngstown State a 3-0 advantage in the second inning.
In the first inning of game two, McDonnell slammed her ninth home run, a three-run blast, to score Tiffany Patteson and Hibner.
The Phoenix, however, scored two runs in the third and two more in the seventh.
The teams will conclude their series today at 11 a.m.

Track
*BOARDMAN -- Lauren Agnew of Boardman High qualified for the Nike freshman national track and field championships June 16-17 in Greensboro, N.C.
She earned the spot when she finished third in the 1600-meter run in 5 minutes, 16.9 seconds at Saturday's Poland Invitational.
*CORTLAND -- The Trumbull County track and field meet will be held Tuesday at Thursday at Lakeview High.
Ryan Gilanyi of Southington (1600-meter run), Andy Arnio of Maplewood (3200) and Donovan Fletcher of Liberty (high jump) are returning champions.
Warren Harding and Lakeview are the defending boys and girls team champions, respectively.
Gary Wiggins of Lordstown, Bryan Albani of Howland, Darren Lee of Warren Harding, Tyler Taylor and Marion Baugh of Niles will be featured in the hurdle races.
Brett Davenport of Lakeview, Daniel Herron and Lee of Warren Harding will be top contenders in the long jump.
Michelle Chaves and Audrey Maheu of Warren JFK and Ashleigh Tondo of McDonald are the athletes to beat in the 800.
The girls shot put and discus will feature Megan White of Mineral Ridge, Sarroya Townsend of Girard and Kristen Angelo of Hubbard.
Tuesday, the girls discus and long jump and boys shot put and high jump finals will start at 4 p.m.
Following preliminaries in the dashes and hurdles, the girls and boys 4x800 relay finals will be run.
Thursday, the girls shot put and high jump and boys discus and long jump will get underway at 4:30 p.m. with the rest of the running finals scheduled for 5.

BOARDMAN -- John Caparanis of WBBW-AM (1240) will be Monday's speaker when the Curbstone Coaches Association holds its noon luncheon at the Lockwood House.
Caparanis is host of the "Tip Of The Cap" radio sports talk show on weekday afternoons.

NAHL playoffs
BOARDMAN -- With victories Friday night, the Cleveland Barons and Bozeman Icedogs advanced to the North American Hockey League's Robertson Cup championship tournament, which begins May 10 at the Ice Zone.
The Southern Minnesota Express and Texas Tornado -- who earlier qualified -- and the Mahoning Valley Phantoms will compete in the five team Robertson Cup tournament.
On May 10, Cleveland will face Bozeman in the first game at 2 p.m., while Southern Minnesota will face the two-time defending champion Tornado in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. The Phantoms receive a first-round bye and will see action May 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. each night.

Minto wins by decision
UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- Heavyweight boxer Brian Minto (24-1) of Butler, Pa., won an eight-round unanimous decision Friday over Billy Zumbrun (19-7) of Salt Lake City.
Minto is managed by Pat Nelson of Youngstown. His next fight will be on June 9 in Atlantic City, N.J., and televised by ESPN2.
Also on the card, middleweight Darnell Boone (10-5-1) of Youngstown was in a six-round draw with Lujaun Simon (13-0-1) of Philadelphia.
Boone is trained and managed by Youngstown's Jack Loew and Tank Diciccio.
Correction
YOUNGSTOWN -- The photo caption in Saturday's YSU football Red and White game incorrectly identified Jeff Koval of Austintown Fitch as making the tackle on Miles Williams.
The tackler was actually sophomore linebacker Mike Marvin from Liberty.

Galaxy wins in MLS
SALT LAKE CITY -- Landon Donovan scored his first goal of the season to help the Los Angeles Galaxy beat Real Salt Lake 3-2 on Saturday.
Donovan tied it at 1 in the 11th minute after Real Salt Lake opened the scoring on Jason Kreis' goal in the sixth minute.
Donovan also had an assist, on the winning goal by Herculez Gomez in the 61st minute.
Salt Lake's Atiba Harris scored on a low cross from Kreis -- who was ejected in the 89th minute after earning his second yellow card of the game -- in the 73rd minute.
The Galaxy (2-2-1) took a 2-1 lead on sliding header by Cobi Jones in the 26th minute.
Derby trial
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Record took control at the top of the stretch then held off Spotsgone by a neck to win the $100,000 Derby Trial on Saturday at Churchill Downs.
The 3-year-old covered the mile on a fast track in 1:36:32, collecting himself under jockey Rafael Bejarano after brushing the gate at the start.
Record pulled ahead of Spotsgone just after the two entered the stretch.
Record paid $12.20, $6.40 and $4.20. Spotsgone paid $27.20 and $8.60, while Mister Triester paid $4.60 to show.
Trainer Bob Baffert said he doesn't plan to enter Record in next week's Kentucky Derby. After never really challenging while finishing third, Mister Triester almost certainly will skip the Derby.
