VILLA MARIA, Pa. -- The annual Bernardin lunch and lecture series will take place from noon to 3 p.m. May 26 at Villa Maria Conference Center. The event honors the memory of the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin and his Catholic Common Ground Initiative by offering a lecture on a current theme. The speaker will be the Rev. Eugene Lauer of the Pittsburgh Diocese, who is ministering in New York as director of the National Pastoral Life Center. He will discuss how the process has developed and the successes and challenges that are being experienced as the Common Ground Initiative is carried out. Registration is due by May 10. New Castle honored
NEW CASTLE -- The American Concrete Pavement Association has recognized the city for its downtown revitalization project. Association representatives presented a plaque to the city at a recent council meeting. Former business administrator John DiMuccio, who accepted the plaque on behalf of the city, credited mayor Wayne Alexander and former Mayor Tim Fulkerson, business administrator Tammi Gibson and former and current members of city council for their efforts in making the project a reality. City officials said they are considering placing the plaque downtown at the new Riverwalk Park.
Wildflower walk
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- A wildflower walk will begin at 2 p.m. May 14 at the Jennings Environmental Education Center. The Jennings staff will explore the unique history, uses and folklore of the season's first blooms in the 1 1/2-hour session. Jennings is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and on weekends as scheduled. The trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset for hiking and other environmentally related activities.
Civil War Roundtable
MERCER, Pa. -- Mercer County Historical Society will present its monthly Civil War Roundtable on May 9 at the society's headquarters, 119 S. Pitt Street. The roundtable will feature the history of the Mercer County Civil War Memorial on Courthouse Square, mourning practices during the Civil War era and potential plans for the next season, which begins Sept. 12. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the program runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Participation in the discussion group is open to the public and is free. For more information, call (724) 662-3490.
