Are waterways vital? You can bank on that

To enhance their learning experience, students from Chaney and Woodrow Wilson High Schools, Youngstown, got a chance to perform chemical testing for water quality and to look for macroinvertebrates at Bear Creek in Mill Creek Park.
Macroinvertebrates are animals that have no backbones and that can be seen with the naked eye.
Above, Kristen Stauffer, left, and Mary Biddle, both Chaney sophomores, took water samples from the creek Thursday. At left, Steven Spencer, also a Chaney sophomore, splits some of the wood in the creek that gad created a logjam.
The students worked with the park's forestry crews during the day. The concept was to show how the stream affects the park.
