Guyer paces Mooney to SVC lead



She had three hits and several defensive plays in a 4-0 win over JFK.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Laura Guyer saved her best for the big game.
The Mooney High junior right-fielder was 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored, as the Cardinals took over sole possession of first place in the Steel Valley Conference with a 4-0 win over Warren JFK at Volney Rogers on Wednesday.
Guyer also made a diving catch in right field and threw out a runner at first base from right field on an apparent single.
Mara Palombaro added two hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals (14-5, 5-0 SVC).
Pauline Courtney (8-5) scattered six hits, while striking out seven and she didn't issue a walk.
Warren JFK fell to 9-5, 3-1.
Ursuline 4, West Branch 3
BELOIT -- Natalie Palermo's two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh inning erased a 3-2 deficit.
Palermo finished with two singles while Vanessa Dickson hit a solo homer and single for Ursuline (14-8).
Bri Benedict had two doubles and three RBIs to lead West Branch (5-12), while Melissa Solomon added two singles.
Howland 6, Struthers 1
HOWLAND -- Carly Sabat hit a triple and single and drove in two runs, while Erin Gilmour had a double and two singles to spark Howland in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
Abby Nicholas pitched a seven-hitter with three strikeouts and one walk for Howland (15-2, 5-1). Nicholas improved to 8-1.
For Struthers, Halle Minchin-Skook hit a double and single.
Springfield 11, Lowellville 1
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Krista Snyder pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and two walks while Ashley Fagnano had a double, three singles and three RBIs to lead Springfield (10-5, 8-0 Inter-County League). Snyder is 9-1.
Christy Warren added a triple, single and one RBI, and Kahley Colaluca two singles and one RBI to aid the Tigers, while Breanne Mincher had three singles and no RBIs.
Lowellville is 8-6, 2-6.
South Range 11, Sebring 7
NORTH LIMA -- Trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back doubles by Heather Stacy and Autumn Carter gave South Range the lift it needed.
Stacy's double knocked in two runs, while Carter pushed one more across.
Stacy finished with a single, double and triple and three RBIs and Carter had a double and single. Lynn O'Connell had three doubles and a single for three RBIs and Crystal Powers had a double and single and three RBIs.
Senior Alexis Binder had struck out seven and walked four for Range.
Megan Allcorn's single and double paced Sebring (6-7, 2-6).
East Palestine 7, Columbiana 0
EAST PALESTINE -- Junior Chelsea Peterson had a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and senior Jen Yokley had a triple and three singles and drove in three runs for the Bulldogs (15-3, 9-1 TCL).
Kristina Davidson's double and Jenny Fast's single were the only hits for Columbiana (9-8, 6-4).
