Fitch pounds out 18 hits in 14-3 win
The Falcons improved to 12-3 with the win against Cardinal Mooney.
STRUTHERS -- Greg McGlynn entered the game in the second inning with the score tied 3-3, but he got plenty of help from Fitch's 18-hit attack and got the win for the Falcons (12-3) in a 14-3 victory over Mooney Wednesday in a baseball game at Cene Park.
McGlynn and starter Brandon Costanza, who pitched 11/3 innings, combined for a three-hitter. Costanza allowed one hit and McGlynn two.
Nick Ritchie had a double and single, Dave Diyorio had two hits (RBI), Jason Bagoly had three singles (three RBIs), Mike Rose had a double and two singles; Joe Burnich had two hits and scored twice and Mike Lyden came off the bench to contribute two hits and two RBIs for the Falcons.
Diyorio also scored three times.
Dan McCloud had a double and single and scored once and Tony Brunetti doubled for Mooney (10-11).
Hoover 9, Boardman 2
BOARDMAN -- North Canton Hoover jumped out to a 9-0 lead before coasting past Boardman.
The Spartans (14-5) scored its two runs in the sixth inning.
Kevin Sikora had two hits and Joe Iaccabucci added a double for the Spartans. Hoover improved to 12-2.
Ursuline 8, Warren Harding 3
STRUTHERS -- Ursuline scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to get on the board first in a game that didn't count in the Steel Valley Conference standings.
In the fourth, Mark Lapikas and Ross Revella were both hit by pitches before Joe Wielbruda's single scored both runners and himself when Harding's center fielder had the wind knocked out of him while diving for the ball. The Irish (11-4) scored another run when Ed Rohan singled in Dave Patrick who had walked.
Patrick (5-1) finished with two hits and an RBI; Rohan and Todd Finn both had two singles and an RBI and Wielbruda had two singles and scored twice.
Patrick, a senior, recorded nine strikeouts.
For Harding (13-5), Greg Patterson had two doubles and scored twice and Andy Dobson had two singles and an RBI and scored a run.
Poland 8, East Liverpool 5
EAST LIVERPOOL -- Freshman Trent Vallinger hit a three run home run in the second inning to spark Poland past East Liverpool.
The Bulldogs (13-3) tallied seven times in the inning, while Mark Turnbull added a double and single and Shawn Zentko added a double.
Logan Wigley (2-0) scattered nine hits and had seven strikeouts to gain the win.
Nate Howard and Kris Carr had four of the nine hits for East Liverpool.
Hubbard 7, Lakeview 3
CORTLAND -- In a game completed at Lakeview High after the first six innings were held at Hubbard earlier this month, Joe Marando had a three-run homer and Mike Carnahan had a solo shot.
Both homers came on April 12, when the game was not completed because of lightning. Marando is a junior.
Dave DeJacimo had three hits for Lakeview.
Hubbard 5, Lakeview 2
CORTLAND -- Joe Marando's three-run homer in the top of the sixth erased Lakeview's 2-0 lead.
Corey Hitt also homered for Hubbard (11-7, 5-2 TAC).
Eric Pirtz and Dave DeJacimo both had two hits, including a double apiece, for Lakeview, whose starting pitcher, Justin Williams had a five-inning shutout in progress with seven strikeouts before being replaced.
Maplewood 8, Bristol 3
BRISTOLVILLE -- Craig Clemson pitched a six-hitter with nine strikeouts and four walks and also had a double, single and one RBI, to pace Maplewood in a Northeastern Athletic Conference game.
Mike Finch had a two-run triple and three RBIs overall to also lead Maplewood (8-4, 7-3 NAC).
Mathews 10, Lordstown 0
LORDSTOWN -- Adam Collier and Ben Mackall combined on a three-hit shutout for Mathews (8-8, 8-2) in a NAC game.
Mackall and Aaron Cyphert had three hits apiece for the Mustangs, while Phil Ciprian and Cory Fiest had two each, Mackall and Ciprian had doubles.
