Arsonist is sentenced to 4 years in prison
YOUNGSTOWN -- Matthew J. Pupio has been sentenced to four years in prison for aggravated arson in a 2004 fire at a West Side business.
Pupio, 20, of Charles Street, Struthers, pleaded guilty this week to two counts of aggravated arson before Judge Maureen A. Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. He was sentenced immediately because he waived his right to a presentence investigation.
Judge Sweeney gave Pupio concurrent four-year prison terms on each count. She also ordered him to make full restitution and pay all court costs.
Pupio was indicted in September 2004, one month after a fire was set in a trash bin behind Super Stitches and Quality Seating, 904 Tod Ave. The fire spread to the building and caused about $300,000 in damage. Two Youngstown firefighters were injured when they were struck in the back by a falling beam as the building burned.
