Pirates prospect out four months
ST. LOUIS -- Brad Eldred, among the Pittsburgh Pirates' top hitting prospects, will be sidelined at least four months after surgery Tuesday for injuries to his left thumb.
An operation performed in Pittsburgh found a fracture of the joint and damage to the ligament. Team spokesman Dan Hart said Eldred, a first baseman, will wear a splint for six to eight weeks and then could begin range of motion exercises.
Manager Jim Tracy assumed that Eldred, who has been playing for Triple-A Indianapolis, would be out for the entire season. He was hurt on Sunday when he collided with a baserunner while reaching for a throw at Louisville.
"It sounds to me with the repair that had to take place, it's probably the season," Tracy said.
Eldred, a sixth-round draft pick in 2002, hit 10 homers in 190 at-bats last season with the Pirates and totaled 40 homers at the Double-A, Triple-A and major-league levels.
