WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners are expected to approve $600,000 worth of upgrades to various county buildings in 2006, including $171,500 for a new roof on the Family Court building on Main Avenue Southwest.
Commissioners have the appropriations on their agenda for today.
The Family Court is also set to get upgrades to its boiler and roof insulation, adding another $85,000.
The county courthouse on High Street will get $75,000 in upgrades, including repairs to the front steps and repairs to the heating and cooling system.
The county engineer's complex on North River Road would get heating and air conditioning upgrades totaling $105,000, and the Stone Building on High Street downtown would get $50,000 for rooftop air handlers.
The board of elections building on Youngstown-Warren Road would get $113,500 worth of electrical repairs.
Commissioners James Tsagaris and Dan Polivka said it is fortunate the county has the money to make repairs to buildings at this time. Such work has been pushed to the back burner in recent years because of funding shortages. The county passed two new sales taxes last year.
Inspections done
County Administrator Tony Carson Jr. said the repairs are the result of a building-by-building inspection done by David Zofko, the county's chief building official.
Polivka said it is hoped that by making these repairs, the county can avoid problems with buildings such as the county encountered at the county health department building, where flooding and mold problems produced large repair bills.
Polivka said additional building repairs are still needed at the dog kennel and other buildings.
Commissioners also interviewed two candidates for a clerical position within the commissioners' office that they hope to fill. Commissioners said the office had three journal clerks until 2004, when one of the three left and was not replaced.
The new position will be an administrative secretary, and one of the roles will be to fill in for others. The job would pay $26,417 for someone with no experience.
