Interim treasurer appointment rescinded; new one picked in rush

The original appointee's certificate expired Dec. 31.
WARREN -- The board of education acted quickly Tuesday to rescind the interim treasurer appointment it had made just Monday evening.
In an emergency special meeting -- called on one hour's notice Tuesday morning -- the board designated a new interim treasurer, so that it can meet this week's payroll.
The board rescinded the appointment of George Donie after learning that his state-issued school treasurer's certificate expired Dec. 31, 2005.
The board has now appointed Lori A. Simione as interim treasurer. Simione is Trumbull County Educational Service Center treasurer.
The board had appointed Donie, who has been serving as a consultant in its treasurer's office, based on erroneous information from the Ohio Department of Education saying he had a currently valid treasurer's certificate, said Dawn M. Marzano, director of communications for the city schools.
What happened
Donie, a former Boardman schools treasurer, was appointed after the resignation of interim treasurer Merri Smith, who left Monday to become Maplewood School District treasurer.
Only three school board members attended Tuesday's meeting: Robert L. Faulkner Sr., Edward Bolino and Shari Harrell. Board members Linda H. Metzendorf and Nedra Bowen were absent and excused.
The board needed to act quickly because the payroll was being processed Tuesday and board employee paychecks will be issued Friday, Marzano explained. Only a state-certified school treasurer can legally sign board-issued checks, she said.
