Poland hands Niles first Metro defeat



After beating McDonald, Springfield is on top of the ICL with a 7-1 record.
STRUTHERS -- Lou Coppola pitched 51/3 innings of four-hit ball, but Jim Pasquine's relief and first baseman Dave White's defense did the rest to help Poland High hand Niles its first Metro Athletic Conference loss, 7-5 Monday at Cene Park.
After Coppola, Pasquine dropped his catching gear to take the mound. With a runner on third in the sixth, he struck out two batters. With the bases loaded in the seventh, Niles hit into an unassisted double play as White caught a line drive, then tagged the runner off the bag. Pasquine earned the save.
Coppola struck out six and walked seven.
Don Stanovak had two singles and an RBI, Matt Pitzuolo tripled and singled for two RBIs and Trent Vallinger had a single and RBI for Poland (11-3, 4-2 MAC).
For Niles (13-2, 5-1), Joe Razzano had two singles and three RBIs and Pat DiChristofaro had one hit and scored once in a three-run third.
Salem 5, Struthers 4
STRUTHERS -- Zack O'Brien doubled, drove in two runs and scored during Salem's five-run fourth inning, lifting the Quakers (9-8, 3-6) in a MAC game.
Zach Jones singled, scored a run and drove in a run for the Wildcats (4-12, 2-6).
Mooney 14, Chaney 4
STRUTHERS -- Mooney scored in every inning in a five-inning Steel Valley Conference game.
Tony Brunetti scored twice and had four singles for two RBIs while Dan McCloud had an RBI triple in the three-run third and also a sacrifice fly in a three-run first.
Winning pitcher Scott Smith had two singles and doubled for an RBI for Mooney (9-9, 4-1 SVC). Also for the Cards, Pat Kohowski doubled, singled, walked and scored twice.
Scott Smith (3-1) was the winner.
For Chaney, Sam Shaffo's double drove in a run in the second and he scored in the same inning. Joe Balog's single drove in two runs in the fifth for the Cowboys (1-15, 1-7).
South Range 12, Jackson-Milton 2
NORTH LIMA -- The Raiders (5-11, 2-4) pounded out 16 hits in an Inter-County league contest. Steve Bensinger scattered six hits to earn the victory.
Joey Leson, who hit a pair of doubles, and Codey Deal had three hits apiece. Mike Nagy hit two doubles for the Bluejays.
Springfield 4, McDonald 2
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Springfield (12-2, 7-1) is now on top of the ICL standings.
McDonald is 5-2 in the league.
Jeremy Savaet (4-0) of Springfield pitched a complete game with six strikeouts to pick up the win. Mike Kempfer hit a double and single and drove in two runs for the Tigers. Steven Hughes hit a double and single and Tom Jon had a pair of singles for the Blue Devils.
Newton Falls 5, Liberty 2
NEWTON FALLS -- A three-run fourth inning keyed by Jae Leeworthy's two-run double was the difference for the Tigers 6-7, 3-5) in the Trumbull Athletic Conference contest.
Mike Pelyak (2-0) scattered five hits with six strikeouts to pick up the win.
Southeast 3, Coventry 2
AKRON -- Joe Knopick (4-1) pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts to pick up the win. He also drove in two runs for the Pirates (5-10).
Ashtabula Sts. John & amp; Paul 10,Youngstown Christian 1
STRUTHERS -- Ashtabula Sts. John & amp; Paul capitalized on Youngstown Christian's errors for a victory in an East Suburban League game at Cene Park.
Youngstown Christian (5-6, 0-4 ESL) committed seven errors but out-hit the Heralds, 7-3.
Derek Burleson had a run-scoring triple and scored two runs for Sts. John & amp; Paul, which managed only three hits off starter Eddie Gonda and last-inning reliever Nathaniel Setnick.
Mathews 4, Py Valley 2
ANDOVER -- Ben Mackall had three hits, including a solo homer in the seventh, to lead Mathews in a Northeastern Athletic Conference game.
Corey Fiest gave up two runs over seven innings, striking out four without walking a batter, to get the win for the Mustangs (7-8, 7-2).
Luke Boggs had two hits for Pymatuning Valley (6-9, 6-1).
