WARREN -- The board of education appointed George Donie, who has been serving as a consultant in its treasurer's office, as interim treasurer after the resignation of interim treasurer Merri Smith.
Smith left to become treasurer of the Maplewood School District. Donie is a former Boardman schools treasurer.
Also, the board offered the treasurer's job, effective next Monday, to Angela J. Lewis, who is now Weathersfield schools treasurer. The offer is contingent upon a background check and agreement between Lewis and the board on contract terms. The board took the action at its Monday night session.
School officials announced that a community update meeting concerning the $153 million new schools construction project will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Western Reserve Middle School auditorium, 200 Loveless Ave. S.W.
The project will replace 13 current schools with five new ones by mid-2009.
Bid deadline
One of the five new buildings will be the $40 million Warren G. Harding High School, and school officials announced that the deadline for the school board to receive construction bids for that school is 2 p.m. May 11.
Construction has begun behind Lincoln Elementary School on Atlantic Street Northeast for the first of four new kindergarten-through-eighth-grade buildings to be built in the project.
The second K-8 building is to be on Willard Avenue, Southeast, and the sites for the last two K-8 buildings, one in the city's northwest quadrant, and the other in the southwest, are still undetermined.
