Canfield aces toss no-hitters



Lauren Sulich and Tricia Bettura both had no-hit games in Massillon.
MASSILLON -- Canfield High softball pitchers Lauren Sulick and Tricia Bettura fired no-hitters Saturday as the Cardinals won three times in the Tigertown Invitational Tournament.
Sulick's no-hitter came against Lake, the defending Division I state champion, as Canfield (10-1) won, 1-0.
Sulick (5-0) homered in the fourth inning for the game's only run. She struck out 12 batters and walked one.
Bryanne Halfhill had the game's only other base hit.
Bettura (4-1) recorded her no-hitter in the Cards' 4-0 win over Northwest (12-5).
Melissa West had three hits and two RBIs while Laura McGivern two hits and two RBIs.
In Canfield's 2-0 victory over Green (11-4), Sulick and Bettura teamed up to pitch a two-hitter.
Sulick, Jena Ervin and Brittany Danilov doubled. Sulick and Rachel Melewski had two hits each while Halfhill and Ervin had an RBI each.
Mooney goes 1-2
MASSILLON -- At the same invitational, Mooney (13-5) won one game and lost two.
In a 4-3 loss to Massillon Perry (12-4), Mooney's Mara Palombaro doubled. She, Katie Hughes and Laura Guyer had RBIs. Colleen Courtney struck out three Perry batters and walked one.
In the Cardinals' 7-2 victory over East Canton, Kelcie Herberger (5-0) scattered four hits and struck out four batters.
DiAndra Dibacco hit two doubles and drove in three runs while Palombaro had two hits.
In a 4-1 loss to Akron Manchester, Courtney (7-5) struck out three batters and walked none. Dibacco had two of Mooney's five hits.
Baseball
WARREN -- Brennen Dolan drove in three runs and Willie Sekula two as Warren Harding defeated Warren JFK, 9-1.
Winning pitcher Tom Popadak (4-0) struck out nine batters and walked one. Deandre Ware had four hits for the Raiders (13-4, 4-0 Steel Valley Conference).
Josh Swipas had two of JFK's three hits.
Salem 11-10, Lisbon 1-9
SALEM -- In the first game, Salem's Josh Dankovich, Ben Miller and Bryan Wright homered. Dankovich drove in four runs and Wright three.
For the Blue Devils, Dustin Borg doubled.
In the 10-inning second game, Dankovich walked and scored the winning run on Jarin Heath's base hit.
Dankovich and Miller homered for the Quakers (8-8). Wright pitched the final three innings (1-2) pick up the victory. He also tripled while Heath and Sean McKee doubled.
For Lisbon (10-5), Rambo had two doubles and Aaron Cosma's two hits drove in two runs.
