DETROIT -- Senior Tiffany Patteson became Youngstown State's all-time hits leader (210) with a 3-for-4 performance in a 3-2 nine-inning victory over Detroit in the first game of Saturday's Horizon League doubleheader.
The Penguins (14-17, 7-5 HL) lost game two, 3-2 in eight innings, to the Titans (11-24, 7-5).
Patteson broke the old record of 208, held by Amanda Berry who played for YSU from 2001-04.
The Penguins, who had 14 hits, trailed 1-0 heading into the seventh inning but tied the score on Becky Hibner's single which scored Bethany Hafley.
In the top of the ninth Allyse Ledford, who went 3-for-4, led off with a single. Sarah Conklin, who ran for Ledford, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lacy Bronson and scored on Lacey Hess' single. Patteson then knocked in Hafley, who singled, with her third hit of the game to put the Penguins ahead, 3-1.
Junior Karilie Burnell picked up her eighth win, scattering seven hits and striking out six.
In the nightcap, Detroit's Michelle Baggio hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the eighth.
The Penguins led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh but the Titans' Christina Bienenstein hit her first home run of the year, a solo shot and Kristin Martin added a RBI single.
In the top of the third, Hibner's single scored Hess. The Penguins added another run in sixth on Kristen McDonnell's seventh home run.
Baseball
DAYTON -- Charles Schultz hit a grand slam to highlight a 10-run seventh inning, as Youngstown State defeated Wright State, 11-4, in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.
Wright State (19-16, 10-9 Horizon League) won the nightcap, 12-0.
Lou Gattozzi hit a solo homer for the Penguins (17-21, 8-8) and had two hits overall. Brent Parks doubled and singled for the Penguins, while Josh Page, Brandon Caipen and Erich Diedrich all singled twice.
Lucas Engle (3-3) pitched a complete game for the Penguins. He allowed 10 hits and struck out two.
In the second game, Wright State's Robert Barrett and Joe Smith limited the Penguins to three hits -- a double and single by Banks, and a single by J.D. Hannan.
Chuck Schiffauer (3-2) allowed seven runs (five earned) in 31/3 innings.
The series concludes today with a single game at 1 p.m.

Umpires' test
The OHSAA advancement test for high school baseball and softball umpires will be conducted this week.

*BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Jenn Toth, a senior pitcher for the D'Youville College softball team from South Range High, was named North Eastern Athletic Conference player of the week.
She won three of four games, allowing only three earned runs in 21 innings. She struck out 18 and held the opposing teams to a .167 batting average.
Toth recorded her second no-hitter of the season in an 11-1 win over Keuka.
She also batted .465 (6-for-13) with five RBIs.
*CLEVELAND -- Tom Manning, a Ursuline High graduate, and a tackle on the NCAA Division III national championship Mount Union College football team, will be presented with a $2,000 scholarship May 1 at the Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame, Inc. banquet at LaCentre in Westlake.
Liberty High's John Humphrey, Canfield's Angelo Babbaro and Warren Harding's Levi George and Alena Westover will receive Scholar-Athlete awards at the same event.
*BOARDMAN -- April Melquist of Youngstown, a senior at Boardman High signed a nation letter of intent to attend Malone College and play volleyball.
A 5-foot-10 middle hitter, Melquist lettered four years in volleyball as well as four years in basketball.
Penn-Ohio golf
VIENNA -- Warren Golf Headquarters/Candywood Golf team extended its lead during the second round of play Saturday in the Penn-Ohio Golf League at Candywood Golf Club.
Sparked by Jim Perry's one-under-par 71 Warren totaled 231/2 points for the day and has a league leading 411/2 points in the standings. Youngstown Ohio Carpet is second with 29 and Sharon Hickory VFW is third at 251/2.
Youngstown's Chad Hanysh was medalist for the day with a 3-under-par 69, while teammate Zack Manski shot a 71. Sharon's Bob Blaze fired an even-par 72.
The next match is May 6 at Mill Creek Golf Course at 8 a.m.

United wins in MLS
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Alecko Eskandarian scored two goals in steady rain to lead D.C. United to a 4-1 victory over the Red Bulls Saturday in Major League Soccer.
Eskandarian opened the scoring in the fourth minute and made it 2-0 in the 59th for D.C. United (3-0-1).
Facundo Erpen (71st) and Jamil Walker (88th) also scored.
Freddy Adu was scoreless for United in the game that attracted a crowd of only 8,475 fans at Giants Stadium.
Youri Djorkaeff scored in the 86th minute for the Red Bulls (0-1-3).

Klitschko stops Byrd
BERLIN, Germany -- Wladimir Klitschko stopped Chris Byrd in the seventh round of a one-sided fight Saturday to gain the IBF heavyweight title.
The Ukranian's right hook finished off the American 41 seconds into the round, the second time Byrd was floored in the fight.
