"Too Hot to Handle" (7 p.m., HBO): On the subject of planet survival, HBO presents its own cautionary documentary, "Too Hot to Handle," described as a global-warming primer. Premiering on Earth Day, the film features leading scientists discussing the greenhouse effect, hurricanes, hybrid vehicles and alternative power, while offering tips on how business, local government and citizens can help reduce global warming emissions. Encouraging viewers to think "outside the barrel" -- as in barrels of oil -- the film explores ways in which Americans can change the world with Earth-friendly options such as ethanol, biodiesel and hybrid cars.
"Elizabeth I" (8 p.m., HBO): Veteran actress Helen Mirren reigns supreme in this lavish two-part miniseries that compellingly explores the intersection of the private and public sides of one of England's most celebrated monarchs. Focusing on the latter stages of Elizabeth's stay on the throne, the story is viewed through her often-stormy relationships with two key men in her life: the Earl of Leicester (Jeremy Irons) and the Earl of Essex (Hugh Dancy). It is largely a story of repressed desire. Known as "The Virgin Queen," Elizabeth remained steadfastly unmarried, despite having no logical heir, to satisfy political ends -- a dynamic that led to dangerous liaisons and agonizing fits of sexual frustration. Mirren plays a stunning range of emotions, from steely resolve and short-tempered dominance to flirtatious charm and anguished yearning. In the end, her Elizabeth becomes convinced that the "hardest thing to govern is the heart."
