'Stangs' Mackall perfect in win



Fitch defeated Canfield in the Myrtle Beach Hawaiian Tropic tournament.
SOUTHINGTON -- Mathews High baseball pitcher Ben Mackall tossed a perfect game Friday, striking out 11 Southington batters in an 11-0 victory in the Northeastern Athletic Conference game.
Kyle Davis homered in the third inning and Corey Fiest's triple in the fourth drove in three runs for Mathews (6-8, 6-2). Phil Ciprian had two hits and scored twice.
Fitch 10, Canfield 4
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Steve Grover pitched a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts for Austintown Fitch (11-3) in Myrtle Beach Hawaiian Tropic tournament.
Grover (4-1) was backed by Mike Rose, who rapped a three-run triple, a single and had four RBIs and Joe Burnich with two singles and three RBIs.
Joe Koch added a pair of singles for the Falcons.
Campbell 12, Struthers 2
CAMPBELL -- Lonnie McQueen hit his second home run of the spring and Ryan Burton went 3-for-3 with a double to lead the Red Devils.
Jim Bigley pitched a complete-game (six innings) for Campbell (4-9, 2-4 Metro Athletic Conference), allowing four hits.
Mooney 7-8, Northwestern 2-9
STRUTHERS -- Scotty Smith had two singles, two RBIs and two runs scored while Bob Herberger added two singles and two RBIs.
Pat Kelley pitched a nine-hitter over the distance to spark Mooney (8-9).
Dan McCloud added two singles and one run scored to aid the Cardinals.
Josh Adkins had two singles and one RBI and Al Yambor two singles and one run scored to pace Northwestern (8-5) while Travis Morris had a one-run double.
In the nightcap called after six innings because of rain, Northwestern rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth inning to overcome an 8-6 deficit, and went on to the 9-8 win.
Josh Adkins belted a two-run triple to pull Northwestern (9-5) into an 8-8 tie. Adkins also had a single and had three RBIs in all and scored twice.
Shaun Sheridan added three singles, two RBIs and one run scored, while Al Yambar had a double, single and two runs scored. Reliever Tyler Mowrer got the mound win.
For Mooney (8-10), Pat Kohowski had a double, single and one RBI while Dan Gallagher had a double, single and one run scored.
Springfield 8, Lisbon 4
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Dane Dobson and John Houser each had two-RBI singles in the sixth inning as Springfield batted around and scored eight runs. Mike Kampfer had two hits for the Tigers (11-2) while Todd Kibby struck out nine batters over the first 51/3 innings.
Aaron Cosma struck out 12 and walked four in five innings for Lisbon (10-3). He also had an RBI double.
Lowellville 9, Southern 2
STRUTHERS -- Lowellville scored five runs in the first inning, held a 7-2 lead after three innings and added two more runs in the sixth to prevail at Cene Park.
Justin Macella and sixth-inning reliever Vince Simon combined to pitch a four-hitter for Lowellville (9-5).
Wes Cattoi had two RBIs, John Wilaj two doubles and one RBI and Ryan Gruber two singles to also pace the Rockets.
Newton Falls 10, Windham 0
NEWTON FALLS -- Mike Pelyak (1-0) scattered three hits with four strikeouts to pick up the win. He also hit a pair of singles as did teammates Trey Mauric, Brad Blevins and Joe Murphy.
Late ThursdayBoardman 9, Canton GlenOak 6
CANTON -- Kevin Sikora's two-run homer led the Spartans to a Federal League victory. Sikora also was the winning pitcher, striking out 11 batters and walking three to improve to 3-0.
Corey Susany pitched an inning and a third for his third save.
Anthony Porter's four hits included a double. Joe Bako had two hits while Joe Iacobucci drove in two runs for Boardman (10-4, 4-1).
