Sobriety checkpoint
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania State Police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint within Lawrence County this week. The checkpoint is part of the governor's initiative to reduce crashes, prevent injuries and save lives. Locations are determined by crash data focusing on areas with high rates of crashes related to driving under the influence.
Buhl Park work day
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Buhl Park will have its annual spring work day Saturday, and volunteers are needed to help with the spring cleanup of the park. Volunteers should meet in the parking lot across from the casino at 9 a.m. that day. They will be assigned a work area within the park. Workers should bring gloves, rakes and garbage bags. Water protection grant
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Buhl Community Water Co. of Mercer County has received a $28,412 Source Water Protection grant, administered through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The money will be used to develop local programs to protect the community's source of drinking water. The initiative will focus on developing protection measures for groundwater resources through wellhead protection efforts.
Frat raises $22,000
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The brothers of Alpha Sigma Phi at Westminster College recently raised more than $22,000 for the American Cancer Society in its ninth annual Relay for Life. "There were 415 registered participants and 25 cancer survivors," said Quay Rosengath, a junior public relations major from New Wilmington. "The brothers would like to thank each of them, as well as our sponsors, for their support." Alpha Sigma Phi started the event to honor the memory of Dr. Peter Macky, a professor who died of cancer nine years ago and who was close to many of the students and staff at Westminster. The fraternity has raised nearly $190,000 over the past nine years.
Urban League event

Commissioners' meeting
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County commissioners' public meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Ellwood City Borough Building, 525 Lawrence Ave. Commissioners will not have their regularly scheduled meeting at 10 a.m. on that day. Commissioners will demonstrate the new voting machines during the meeting.
