Robbers take car, pizza
YOUNGSTOWN -- A pizza, $22.50 and two-liter soft drink were taken at gunpoint from a Pastino's Pizza employee who made a delivery at a house in the 300 block of Falls Avenue, and another employee waiting in a car gave it up at gunpoint, police said. The delivery employee said she went to the door around 10 p.m. Thursday and was ordered inside by a gunman. The robber and another man then ran out the back door. The woman ran out the front screaming to the other Pastino's employee in the car. One of the robbers got into the car, ordered the second employee out at gunpoint and drove away, reports show.
New detective sergeant
YOUNGSTOWN -- Robert Deichman, hired as a patrol officer in January 1999, was promoted Friday to detective sergeant. Deichman fills the spot left open by Detective Jack Palma, who retired April 14 with 33 years of service.
Ridge boy arrested
GIRARD -- City police have arrested a 15-year-old Mineral Ridge boy in a bomb threat phoned into Girard High School in September. According to police reports, the boy was being questioned about a theft when details of the bomb threat came out. Reports say the boy, who had been arrested in Weathersfield on charges of stealing cellular phones, made the call from a stolen cellular phone. He will be charged with inducing panic.
Motorcyclist killed
CALCUTTA -- Warren F. Louden, 66, of Chris Avenue, Washingtonville, was killed in a traffic accident about 5:53 p.m. Thursday on state Route 170 in St. Clair Township, said troopers of the Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The patrol said Louden was riding a motorcycle south on the state route near Duke Road. H. Wayne Burcham, 39, of Ashton Road, East Liverpool, was northbound in a tractor-trailer with an oversized load that was being escorted by two vehicles. Louden went into the northbound lane and his motorcycle struck the left front corner of the truck, the patrol said.
Crime victims events
YOUNGSTOWN -- Help Hotline Crisis Center will have its annual luncheon honoring victims of crime Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. John Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave. John Geras, re-entry program coordinator, Adult Parole Authority, Akron Region, will speak on reducing recidivism and successful offender re-entry. Cost is $15. Credits will be offered for counseling and social work. Help Hotline and the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center will host a victim support breakfast Wednesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave. The speaker will be Dr. Sylvia Imler, a professor at Youngstown State University. Not 'just a secretary'
YOUNGSTOWN -- This Sunday's "Community Connection" show, which airs at 6:30 a.m. on WFMJ-TV 21, focuses on National Administrative Professionals Week and National Volunteers Week. Christine Simone, president of the Yo-Mah-O chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals, discusses Secretary's Day, and how ever-changing technology makes an administrative professional more than "just a secretary." Then, Maureen Drummond and Jenn Maloney of the Volunteer Services Agency will discuss volunteer opportunities in the Mahoning Valley.
New recycling site
POLAND -- A new community recycling drop-off site will officially open Friday at 361 Johnston Place. Mahoning County Commissioners' Reuse and Recycling Division, The Green Team, in partnership with the Poland School District, Poland Village mayor and council, Poland Township trustees and the Poland Community Baseball Association, will participate in the opening. Hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The new site will accept glass bottles and jars, plastics, metal food and beverage cans, newspapers, magazines and catalogs, phone books and flattened corrugated cardboard.
Duct-tape robber
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A man who concealed his face with duct tape robbed the 7-Eleven store on Wilmington Road early Friday, police said. They described the robber as a thin, white man standing about 5 feet 5 inches tall with eyeglasses. Anyone witnessing the robbery is asked to call Neshannock police at (724) 656-9300.
