PENN STATE SHENANGO Group's quilt to help build scholarship

The handiwork of a group of students will be raffled off to fund a scholarship.
SHARON, Pa. -- Women who have had an impact in American history will help send a woman student at Penn State Shenango to class.
The Shenango Women's Commission, a student organization of Penn State Shenango, has created a quilt honoring women in American history and intend to raffle it off to establish a scholarship for women at the Shenango campus.
Accompanying the quilt will be a history book with details about the women for whom the quilt squares were designed and details about the women who created the quilt.
The goal is to raise $12,000 to establish the scholarship, which will fund one course per semester for a woman on campus.
Tickets are $2 each and are on sale through Sept. 11 at the Penn State Lartz Memorial Library or through any member of the Shenango Women's Commission.
The drawing will be Sept. 12.
About the quilt
The quilt pattern used was Stars Across America, designed by Eleanor Burns of Quilt in a Day & reg;. The commission members did the sewing of the quilt top, and the long-arm stitching will be done by Carol Selepec of Create-a-Stitch in Midland, Pa. Selepec will donate the necessary batting and backing to the project.
In addition to the quilt project this year, the organization sponsored a tax accountant's presentation to students, and last year, sponsored a debate on what women had at stake in the 2004 presidential election.
Next year, the organization plans to have a panel discussion on the issues facing women who are starting and expanding their own businesses in the Shenango Valley.
