Mahoning County meet at Fitch today; Lakeview event also set



AUSTINTOWN -- Although some athletes are away from the area on spring break, the Mahoning County track and field championships today at Fitch High School should be closely contested.
Preliminaries in field events, sprints and hurdles get under way at 10 a.m. Finals will follow.
Fitch High's boys and Boardman's girls, the 2005 overall champs, will defend their titles.
The Falcons' Sam Cassano, who set a Division I discus record (170 feet, 4 inches) last year, is back. He has the area's best throw (175-4) this season.
Another performer returning is Ursuline's Tiffani Miller, who set Div. II records in the 1600 (5 minutes, 31.5 seconds) in 2004 and in the 800 (2:30) last year.
19 schools entered
CORTLAND -- Nineteen schools will compete in today's 10th Lakeview Invitational.
Field event prelims are set for 9:30 a.m. and sprint and hurdle prelims begin at 10.
Girls and boys 3200-meter run finals are scheduled then while the rest of the finals will follow semifinals.
Schools entered are Ashtabula Edgewood, Badger, Brookfield, Berkshire, Chagrin Falls, Grand Valley, Hubbard (girls), Jefferson, LaBrae Lakeview, Ledgemont, Niles, Mathews, Pymatuning Valley, Southington, Warren Christian (boys), Warren JFK and Warren Harding.
