Leadership awards to go to 23 Valley teens



The award recognizes high school juniors and seniors.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Twenty-three young people from the Diocese of Youngstown will receive the Eagle of the Cross Award from the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry during a liturgy and awards banquet at 6 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 343 Via Mount Carmel.
The award recognizes high school juniors and seniors who demonstrate dedication, integrity, values and promise of the church and society. The Eagle of the Cross Award, from the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, was introduced in 1999. The award is presented to youths in the six counties of the Diocese of Youngstown who model Christian discipleship and exemplify the qualities of moral integrity, prayer, good works and Christian leadership in their schools and parish communities.
This year's candidates were selected from among 73 nominations that highlighted parish, school and community involvement of 62 youths. A maximum of two Eagle of the Cross Awards are presented for each of the six Catholic high schools and each of the counties in the diocese.
