Firefighters battle South Side blazes
YOUNGSTOWN -- Citing safety concerns, a vacant two-story house at 16 E. Ravenwood Ave. found fully engulfed in flames was allowed to burn to the ground, the fire department said.
The cause of the fire at 4 a.m. Friday remains under investigation. Damage was listed as $31,000. Firefighters were sent back to the scene around 9:30 a.m. Friday for a rekindle.
Crews also were kept busy late Thursday night at other South Side locations:
At 9:56 p.m., fire started on the second floor in a kitchen area at 2508 Glenwood Ave., another vacant structure. Damage was listed as $21,000, and the fire department requested demolition. The cause remains under investigation.
At 9:58 p.m., a Hudson Avenue resident reported seeing three juveniles on the porch of a vacant house at 3427 Hudson trying to extinguish a small fire. Two more fires, one in the garage and one on the back porch, were found. Damage from the arson was listed as $4,000.
A Molotov cocktail was ignited near the front door of a business at 2712 Market St. around 10:30 p.m., and another firebomb, unburned, was found near the curb, reports show. The phone directory lists the business as Hooligan Ink Tattoo. A bouncer at a nearby bar saw the flames and used a dry chemical to extinguish the fire. A disgruntled customer was listed as a suspect.
