Federation receives congratulatory proclamation
New goals set as accomplishments become things of the past.
CANFIELD -- "Remembering the Past and Building for the Future" was the theme chosen by the Youngstown Area Federation of Women's Clubs for a celebration held April 19 at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St., to mark the organization's 100 years of service.
During the social period, Jason Whitehead, chief of staff for Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams presented a proclamation acknowledging the club's impact on the community to Lucile Bartelmay, federation president.
Greetings on the historical occasion were also extended by Mrs. Paul Wilken, president of the General Federation of Women's Clubs and Ohio Federation of Women's Club, and by Mrs. Dennis Vugrinovich of the Northeast Ohio District.
During a talk based on the theme, "Through the Years with YAFWC, " Mrs. Bartelmay noted the event was a time for reminiscing about achievements and changes that have transpired through the years, achievements that have affected members personally and the community as a whole.
However, some of the changes, particularly a decline in membership, while not appreciated, will hopefully serve as an inspiration for those participating in the event to work harder to foster a renewed interest in volunteerism and to begin "building for the future."
Accounts of the group's accomplishments were provided through displays of scrapbooks, clippings and photographs arranged throughout the room.
Members felt a certain sense of satisfaction as they reflected on the work they have already done and the friends they have made over the years through the organization.
They agreed to continue one of the organization's major projects, the awarding of two scholarships each year, one to a high-school senior and one to a nontraditional student at Youngstown State University.
In the beginning
Originally the federation was little more than a number of sewing groups that shared a common interest in needlework. Logically, the groups eventually combined and became the Women's Club League in 1906 and then became affiliated with the Ohio Federation of Women's Clubs in 1910. The name has been changed several times since then and is now officially the Youngstown Area Federation of Women's Clubs.
Those who served
The first president was Mrs. Warren P. Williamson who was followed by a number of dedicated leaders including those who are members of the 100th anniversary committee, Lee Bowden, Barbara Higgins, Dorothy Bailey, Ann Hill, Dorothy Schwers, Louise Slawecki, Mary B. Smith, and Kathleen Rickert who offered the meditation.
Following the noon luncheon, the program for the anniversary event was the "Presidents' Wives," presented by members of the Salem Preservation Society. Musical entertainment was provided by Rick Barber.
