CANFIELD -- Lauren Kepley, an eighth-grade honors pupil at Canfield Village Middle School, represented the Theresa Burke School of Irish Dance at the World Championship of Irish Dance in Belfast, Northern Ireland, earlier this month. Lauren is ranked 11th in the Midwest and took 14th in the North American world qualifier to earn her spot in Belfast. It was her third trip to the world championship. She has been taking lessons at the Burke School, a nonprofit organization, for the last nine years. The dancers compete year-round at local competitions.
Canine-rehab speaker
YOUNGSTOWN -- Susan Marino, founder and president of Angel's Gate Hospice and Rehabilitation Centre for Animals, will speak at 1 p.m. Monday in The Gallery of Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University. She is a certified canine rehabilitation practitioner and a registered nurse. She founded Angel's Gate in Fort Salonga, N.Y., in 1992.
Online school showcase
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ohio Connections Academy, a virtual public school, will have a free hands-on informational program showcase for parents from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 18 at ITT Technical Institute, 1030 N. Meridian Road. The Internet school is completing its third year of operation in Ohio and has begun recruiting students for the fall. The showcase will give parents and prospective pupils an opportunity to meet academy teachers and the principal, talk with parents of students who are currently enrolled and participate in a demonstration of online technologies. It is a public school, and there are no tuition, fees or supply costs. The school serves more than 900 Ohio children in kindergarten through ninth grade and will expand to include 10th grade this fall. The school loans each family a computer, reimburses them for an Internet connection, provides all curriculum materials and supplies all of the necessary software and free technical support to ensure the computer is working properly. Each pupil also is assigned a professional, certified teacher to oversee learning and assess student progress.
Disney World college
CANFIELD -- Disney & reg; CareerStart Program recruiters will visit Canfield at 6 p.m. Friday to seek recent high school graduates for paid employment opportunities at the Walt Disney World & reg; Resort near Orlando, Fla. The program runs from August until mid-January and offers high school graduates a one-of-a-kind opportunity to network and train with Disney leaders, earn college credit and meet people from around the world. Recruiters will be at the Hampton Inn & amp; Suites Youngstown meeting room, 6690 Ironwood Blvd. Interested students must attend the presentation or view an online presentation at www.disneycareerstart.com.
Reception for KSU chief
WARREN -- Kent State University Trumbull Campus is honoring retiring President Carol Cartwright with a casual reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Technical Building Rotunda. The reception is free and open to the public. Cartwright served as university president since 1991 and announced in October she is retiring. She agreed to stay on until a successor is in place. The university is conducting a search for her replacement. Cartwright was the first woman president of a public university in Ohio.
Social work open house
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University will have an open house for people interested in a career in social work at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Regional Learning Alliance at Cranberry Woods. The university will offer a degree program for practicing paraprofessionals that can be completed in two years.
