OSU's Boone fined,gets 10 days
COLUMBUS -- Ohio State offensive tackle Alex Boone has been fined $300 and sentenced to 10 days in jail in a drunken driving case.
Boone pleaded no contest to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and was convicted Wednesday in Franklin County Municipal Court. A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt but means the defendant will not fight charges.
The jail time will be suspended if the 18-year-old Boone completes an alcohol-education program by July 4.
The court-ordered program is separate from the Ohio State athletic department's drug and alcohol counseling program Boone has entered as a first-time offender.
Boone entered the plea so he could put the case "behind him and move on," attorney Bradley Koffel said.
Coach Jim Tressel declined to comment after Thursday's practice.
Boone was involved in a two-car accident near campus April 2. His blood-alcohol level tested at .159 percent, nearly twice Ohio's legal limit of .08 percent, according to police reports.
The 6-foot-8, 315-pound Boone played in 11 games last season as a freshman and was chosen the Buckeyes' most outstanding first-year offensive player. He played in high school at Lakewood St. Edward.
Vyborny signs on for two more years
COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Blue Jackets have reached agreement on a two-year contract with leading-scorer David Vyborny.
Vyborny, 31, set career highs with 43 assists and 65 points this season for the Blue Jackets. He is an original member of the six-year-old franchise and leads in goals (90), assists (137), points (227) and games (395).
The Czech Republic native signed the new contract on Monday. He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. He made $1.14 million last season and the new pact is believed to be worth $2 million to $2.4 million per season.
Pirates' Gerut agrees to play
PITTSBURGH -- Outfielder Jody Gerut will report to the Pittsburgh Pirates' extended spring training camp for conditioning and will not have knee surgery.
The agreement was reached Thursday, shortly before a scheduled hearing on the grievance filed by the players' association after the club stopped paying his $875,000 salary.
Gerut, acquired from the Cubs in a trade last season, was demoted to Triple-A Indianapolis at the end of spring training. Gerut then told Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield his right knee was hurting and he would not report.
While the Pirates agreed with a doctor's findings that Gerut has tendinitis, they said he passed all medical tests and was fit to play. Gerut was placed on the minor league suspended list after telling the team he planned to have additional surgery on the knee.
Therrien vowsbetter results
PITTSBURGH -- Michel Therrien made only one promise after learning Thursday he will return as the Pittsburgh Penguins' coach next season.
The Penguins' days of drafting early are done.
"We're happy to get the No. 2 pick, but let me tell you something: This is the last time we're going to draft No. 1, No. 2, No. 3," Therrien said after the Penguins landed the No. 2 pick in the June draft. "It is a great thing for the organization but it's the last year."
St. Louis, last in the NHL overall standings, won the annual draft lottery and will draft first.
