KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- YSU sophomore Bethany Anderson broke her own school record in the hammer with a fourth-place mark of 175 feet, 1 inch to highlight YSU's performances at the Sea Ray Relays.
Senior Dave Mealy, a Springfield High graduate, was the top men's finisher with a 12th-place time of 15:38.51 in the 5,000-meters.
Also on the men's side, Jarrod Davis finished 14th in the discus with a personal-best mark of 158-2, and J.D. Sheppard ran a personal-best time of 1:53.43 in the 800 to place 24th and move into fourth-place on YSU's all-time list. Nick Smith (10:11.68) and Nick Kruse (10:20.67) finished 14th and 15th in the steeplechase, and freshman Aaron Merrill (Leetonia) finished 15th in the shot put with a personal-best mark of 50-11 1/2. Merrill's heave in the shot put ranks third all-time, and Davis ranks second all-time in the discus.
On the women's side, Danielle Bolt ran a personal-best time of 12.01 in the 100 to place 31st, and Jeanna Cunningham (Warren Harding) placed 31st in the 400. Satara Freeman added a 28th-place in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.47, and Anderson finished 22nd in the shot put with a mark of 43-4 1/2.
The Penguins will compete at Akron on Saturday.
Women's golf
TOLEDO -- YSU showed solid third-round improvement to finish eighth at the 11-team Toledo Rocket Spring Classic on Tuesday.
The Penguins finished with a three-round score of 1,008 with rounds of 344, 335 and 329. Eastern Michigan won the event with an impressive 900, while the host Toledo was second with a 921.
Leading the way for Youngstown State was sophomore Brittany Jones who finished 23rd carding a three-round total of 85, 80 and 78.
Other finishers for the Guins were sophomore Felicia Ciotola finished 37th with a 254 (91-85-78), sophomore Adrianna DiLonardo placed 45th with a 263 (84-96-83), junior Bonnie Sherman was 46th with a 264 (86-88-90) and sophomore Kristen Albrecht was 49th with a 268 (89-82-87).

Umpires honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Metro Umpires Association recently recognized 20 members for milestone years of service as registered OHSAA officials in baseball and softball.
They are: Pete Vukovich (45 years); Ed Moore (30 years); Jerome Seman and Michael Lowry (20 years); Gene Naples, Shelly Zura, Ken Swanson, David Anderson, Patrick Novak and Mike Schwartz (15 years); John Pangio, Craig Hassell, Mike Hammond, Anthony Serluco, Kevin Toth and Mike Dobran (10 years) and Bill Dreier, Jim Davis, Gordon Trimm and John Doherty (5 years).

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College senior Lucas Munson was named Presidents' Athletic Conference men's golfer of the week.
Munson was medalist at the Thiel Invitational, shooting 2 under par 70.
Former YSU pitcherheads to Atlantic City
YOUNGSTOWN -- Former Youngstown State University pitcher Matt Brumit was traded by the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League.
The right-handed pitcher was traded to Atlantic City of the Atlantic League for a player to be named. Brumit was a 44th-round draft pick of the Yankees in 2002.

Penn Statefines Portland
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State fined women's basketball coach Rene Portland $10,000 after concluding she violated university policy in her treatment of a player who was perceived to be a lesbian.
The university said Portland would be dismissed for any future violation of the school's nondiscrimination policy. She was also ordered to take professional development "devoted to diversity and inclusiveness."
Reading from a statement at a news conference, Portland said she disagreed with the ruling and that the conclusions were flawed. She said she would return as Penn State coach next season, but declined to answer questions.
Morrison expectedto turn pro
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Gonzaga forward Adam Morrison is expected to forgo his senior year and declare for the NBA draft, according to numerous media reports.
