Probe fails to determine how money was lost

LISBON -- Columbiana County Sheriff David Smith said Tuesday he believes $300 paid for a bond was somehow lost last autumn.
Smith said the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation could not determine what happened to the money.
The cash for the bond was paid at the county jail after hours. Smith said the dispatcher put it in an envelope, as she was supposed to.
The bond was for a case in East Liverpool Municipal Court. A runner for the Columbiana County Clerk of Courts Office later picked up all the bond envelopes for delivery to courts throughout the county.
The county has now switched to accepting only money orders or credit cards for bonds.
