Niles' record jumps to 13-1



Once-beaten Canfield won twice in Myrtle Beach.
GIRARD -- Kyle Pitts tossed a three-hitter over six innings at Tod Park as the Niles High baseball team improved to 13-1 with a 9-1 win over Girard Tuesday.
Pitts was relieved in the seventh by Anthony Ragozine.
Anthony Roberts had two doubles, while Robbie Porter and Mike Kelly also doubled for Niles. Kelly, Sean Cleary and Matt Vince finished with two hits apiece.
Senior Scott Barton had a single in the fifth inning, while Kevin Nastase and Mark Feist also had a hit apiece for Girard (8-5).
Girard sophomore Chris Weibel had three strikeouts and walked five in 42/3 innings.
Louisa County 11, Fitch 0
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Falcons were limited to four hits, with Joe Koch leading the way with a pair of singles in the Hawaiian Tropic Classic.
Winning pitcher John Barfield (3-1) hit a double and single. The losing pitcher was Jason Lutz (3-1), who allowed eight hits and struck out four.
Fitch won its first game Monday. Each of the 36 teams gets to play four games. After Thursday's games, the event continues with single elimination.
Canfield 12, Elkton 2
MYRTLE BEACH, S. C. -- Andrew Turocy (5-0) pitched five innings to pick up the win for the Cardinals in the Hawaiian Tropic Classic.
Dan Moran hit a home run, singled and drove in two runs for the Cardinals. Mike Hoelzel had two hits and two RBIs and Kyle Banna had two hits and three RBIs.
Elkton is 1-1 in the tournament.
Canfield 9, Jamestown (N.Y.) 4
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Cardinals (10-1, 2-0) scored all their runs in the first four innings.
John Pitzulo, Jim Gromada and Hoelzel hit a double apiece. Steve Schoenfeld (2-1) worked six inning for the win.
T.J. Booty hit a double for Jamestown.
Ursuline 3, Mooney 0
STRUTHERS -- Senior Dave Patrick pitched a four-hitter and struck out eight in the non-league game.
Patrick (3-1) retired 12 in a row at one point. Patrick also had two singles and scored a run. Ed Rohan had a run-scoring double in the third for Ursuline (9-3).
Pat Kelley doubled and Bob Herberger singled for Mooney (6-8).
Warren Harding 10, Campbell 1
WARREN -- Warren Harding's Greg Patterson (2-2) pitched a four-hitter, striking out eight and walking one.
Deandre Ware and Greg Patterson each tripled and drove in two runs for the Raiders (10-3), while Caullen Owens also had two RBIs.
Warren JFK 6, Lordstown 3
WARREN -- Craig Dudek had 10 strikeouts and Josh Swipas fanned three more during the last 11/3 innings for the Eagles.
Marc Rossi had a double and a single, while Nick Aulet, Scott Difford and Tim McBride each had two singles for JFK. Rossi, who had two RBIs, also scored once and stole two bases, while McBride stole two bases and drove in a run.
Sophomores Nate Rech and Jake Schofer each singled for Lordstown (2-8).
Struthers 12, Chaney 6
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dave Yash had four hits, including three doubles and Mike Barone added three for Struthers (3-9).
Joe Balog had three hits and Jake Kohut had two for Chaney (1-11).
Western Reserve 10, Lowellville 0
BERLIN CENTER -- Sophomore Tommy Burton was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs for Western Reserve (8-5, 6-2) in an Inter-County League game.
Jerod Barker pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out five, and also had two hits on offense. Brandon Moherman and Jeff Zatchok added two hits apiece.
Jackson-Milton 8, Mineral Ridge 5
NORTH JACKSON -- Ryan Clawson had four hits to lead Jackson-Milton (3-6, 2-5 ICL), which rallied from a 3-0 deficit.
Josh Garland had three hits for Ridge.
Beaver Local 10, Salem 9
LISBON -- Beaver Local scored six runs in the fifth inning for a 10-6 lead keyed by Shayne Kosek's three-run double.
Kosek finished with a double, two singles and five RBIs to pace Beaver Local (4-8). Josh Derenberger added a homer and two RBIs while Kelly Emmerling had three singles and one RBI.
Bryan Wright had a homer and three RBIs to lead Salem (5-7), while Bill Ellis had a homer, a double and an RBI. David Wright added a homer, two singles and one RBI, and Ben Miller homered.
Nick Muscari pitched the distance for Beaver Local to get the win. He had seven strikeouts and four walks.
West Branch 9, Marlington 7
ALLIANCE -- The Warriors (8-4) took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning and were ahead 8-5 in the top of the seventh, then held off the Dukes' (7-7) rally in the bottom of the seventh.
Shawn Linder and Dave Kester paced West Branch with a pair of singles apiece.
Carl Benedict and Allen Strouble each had three hits for the Dukes and Bob Switza had a pair of singles.
