Man to be arraignedin double murder
YOUNGSTOWN -- Taurus L. Hearns, 32, of East Liberty Street, Girard, was expected to be arraigned today in municipal court on two counts of murder. Records show Hearns was sent to prison in December 1996 for felonious assault and a gun crime and was released on one year's probation March 27. Hearns is accused in the April 7 double homicide at an apartment at 840 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Sampson J. Williams III, 34, of Fairgreen and Clearmont avenues was found dead on a couch at 11:51 p.m. The apartment resident, Ronnie R. Summers, 45, died later. Investigators are declining at this time to discuss details of the case, said Detective Sgt. Rick Alli, police department spokesman.
Work to begin on I-680
YOUNGSTOWN -- Interstate 680 under the Wayne Avenue/Pyatt Street bridge will have various lane restrictions in both directions beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday. The state Route 7/U.S. Route 62 ramps will remain open, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Food reported stolen
BOARDMAN -- The owner of Youngstown Sports Grille on South Avenue reported several cases of food taken from two outside freezers. He told police he arrived at the business Monday morning to find padlocks removed from the freezers. Missing were 14 cases of steak burgers, five cases of chicken breasts, one case of fish filets and two cases each of ribs and chicken strips.
Jar of mercury removedfrom man's apartment
YOUNGSTOWN -- An unopened quart-size canning jar of mercury, a highly toxic heavy metal, was taken Tuesday from an elderly man's apartment in the 1700 block of Fifth Avenue by city fire department Battalion Chief Robert Hian. He found the nearly full jar encased in bubble wrap and placed the dangerous substance in an evidence container and turned it over to Mahoning County Haz-Mat on Industrial Road for disposal. The man's daughter had called police to report the jar. Last week, a Warren woman reported a broken vial of mercury in her Freeman Street home. Dangerous levels of mercury later detected in the house forced the family to leave.
Lynn Swann to speak
SALEM -- Former Pittsburgh Steelers star Lynn Swann, running for Pennsylvania governor as a Republican, will be the keynote speaker at the Columbiana County Lincoln Day dinner at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Timberlanes restaurant. Swann, who works for ABC Sports, is running for elected office for the first time.
Trafficking charge
CANFIELD -- A man charged with trafficking in a school zone is set to appear in county court here today. Marshall Poole, of East Boston Avenue, Youngstown, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Canfield police stopped Poole at 10:30 p.m. Friday on East Main Street for driving with a shattered windshield, according to a police report. He acknowledged having marijuana, and an officer found a large plastic bag containing 15 smaller bags of it, the report said. Poole was also charged with driving under suspension. His wife, Rhonda Poole, to whom the vehicle is registered, was charged with wrongful entrustment. She also is to appear in court today at 5:30 p.m. Marshall Poole was free on $4,500 bond.
