Here's another case of a deceptive play that cannot cost but can, and did, gain. It allowed West to win the setting trick.
East decided that his intermediates made the hand too good for a 15-17 point one no trump and elected to open one diamond. South chose to double and then bid spades at his next turn to show a good hand with a five-card or longer spade suit -- not our choice with such a shabby holding in the key suit; change the queen of clubs for the queen of spades and that action would be more palatable. North did well to raise to three spades -- the queen of spades must be worth its weight in gold -- and South's four spades ended the auction.
West led the deuce of diamonds and the appearance of dummy made it obvious to East that he could expect little defensive help from partner. To find out whether West held the queen of diamonds, East made the discovery play of the nine, losing to the declarer's queen. South led a spade to the queen and East ducked smoothly. On the spade return, East followed with the nine. With the ace of spades apparently marked with West, declarer inserted the ten, and a very surprised West won the trick with the jack. East had to score three aces for down one.
Note that, had East taken the queen of spades with the ace, declarer would have tried to reach dummy by leading a club to the king but, when that didn't work, he would have had to play the king of spades from hand. (Yes, double-dummy East can duck the king of clubs, but that would not be good defense if South holds a singleton club.)
