STRUTHERS -- When Ursuline High junior Eddie Rohan says he's been playing baseball his whole life, he's exaggerating.
He's only been playing since he was 3.
"I just want to keep playing," said Rohan. "I'll see how long I can go."
He's got the right genes.
Rohan's father, Ed, was a standout at Liberty and played one year as an outfielder at Youngstown State. His cousin, Greg, is an infielder at Kent State, which has shown a lot of interest in Rohan.
"I went up and visited [Sunday]," said Rohan. "It'd be a plus to go there and play with [Greg]."
Monday's performance
Rohan scored twice and added an RBI Monday as the Irish beat Chaney 21-5 in a Steel Valley Conference game at Cene Park. Ursuline had 13 hits and held a 21-0 lead at one point.
"We've got a good lineup," said Rohan, a catcher who batted .462 last season. "We had a bad week last week. We've got to swing the bats a little better than we did last week."
College coaches aren't allowed to call Rohan until he's a senior, but it's pretty clear that they're interested. Kent State has been the most aggressive, although YSU will likely offer him a spot, Ursuline coach Sean Durkin said.
"He's got excellent bat speed," said Durkin. "He's just a baseball player.
"He's going to wait and see [before picking a college]. He probably has a chance to go a little bigger."
He's not the only one. Junior Matt Yarab has also gotten some looks, although he'll likely have to choose between baseball and football at the next level.
"[Yarab has] visited some big-time programs in football," said Durkin. "With baseball, he'd probably have to go a little smaller."
After a strong start, the Irish (8-3, 4-1) scored just four runs in three games last week and grounded into eight double plays over that span.
"We need to bust out of it," said Durkin. "Maybe [Monday's game] will help a little bit."
Lapikas the winner
Mark Lapikas (1-0) gave up one hit over three innings to get the win, striking out five and walking one.
Ursuline's No. 9 hitter, Joe Wielbruda, went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and scored a run and Ryan Satterlee added two hits, two RBIs and scored a run. The Irish sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning (scoring seven runs). They scored eight more in the fourth.
Chaney (1-10) scored five runs in the fifth. Matt Krause went 2-for-2 with a run scored and Kevin Barron reached base twice and scored a run.
