YOUNGSTOWN -- The Jewish Community Relations Council has announced the days and times for its annual Holocaust commemoration programs.
The annual Shoah Memorial Ceremony will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, and the 13th annual Community Holocaust Commemoration event will be at noon April 25 in the rotunda of the Mahoning County Courthouse, 120 Market St.
The theme for this year's events is "Legacies of Justice," the national theme set by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Each program will examine the lessons of the Holocaust, and also will draw attention to current victims of oppression and genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan.
The annual memorial ceremony at the JCC will feature a performance of the Youngstown Area Holocaust Impact Theater. Made up of high school members of the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization of the Mahoning and Shenango valleys, the Holocaust Impact Theater Troupe will perform originally written and produced vignettes on issues and events related to the Holocaust.
The ceremony also will include a newly adapted series of Holocaust-inspired readings and a candlelighting ceremony led by survivors and children of survivors.
Courthouse event
The commemoration at the courthouse will feature the recognition of the winners of the JCRC's annual student Holocaust writing contest, the presentation of a Youngstown mayoral proclamation, as well as a memorial candlelighting ceremony and the Mahoning Valley's official participation in the announcement of the international "Names Recovery Campaign," a project of Yad Vashem in Jerusalem to recover the names of 6 million people who died at the Holocaust.
The Holocaust Commemoration and Education Task Force, a committee of the JCRC, is chaired by Rabbi Joseph Schonberger and Rochelle Miller, both of whom are children of Holocaust survivors, and is made up of numerous survivors, children of survivors and other interested volunteers from the Shenango and Mahoning valleys.
