MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Senior Brandon Caipen had a career day with five hits and six RBIs to lead YSU to a 12-8 victory over UW-Milwaukee Sunday.
Caipen became the seventh player in school history to record five hits in a game and the first since Kellen Dixon against Western Illinois in 2001.
The Penguins (14-21, 6-8 Horizon League) took two of three games from the Panthers (14-17, 6-8).
Caipen singled in the first and his two-run homer in the third got the Penguins within 3-2. The senior catcher hit a three-run double as part of a five-run fifth that gave YSU a 7-3 advantage.
The Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the fifth off starter Chuck Schiffhauer, but the sophomore righty allowed only four runs on 13 hits in 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win.
After hitting into a fielder's choice in the sixth, Caipen singled in the eighth as the Penguins went ahead 8-4 when Brent Parks scored on an error.
The Panthers scored three runs in the eighth to get within 8-7, but a three-run double from J.D. Hannan and a RBI single from Caipen gave the Penguins a 12-7 lead.
UWM loaded the bases in the ninth with one out but Ryan Sellman came in to get the nation's leading hitter, Mike Goetz, to foul out, and a fielder's choice to earn the save.
The Penguins will play host to Cleveland State Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Eastwood Field.
On Saturday, YSU scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning of game two to salvage a doubleheader split with UW-Milwaukee, 12-10.
The Panthers took the first game, 7-4.
In game two, the Panthers jumped on YSU starter Eric Shaffer early with three runs in the first inning. The teams traded runs in the fifth, but YSU scored three runs in the sixth to tie the score 4-4. After John Koehnlein reached on an error to start the inning and Erich Diedrich was hit by a pitch, Lou Gattozzi hit a three-run homer to left.
Caipen scored on Parks' sacrifice fly to put YSU ahead 5-4 in the seventh, but Mike Goetz hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to give the Panthers a 7-5 advantage.
YSU's six-run eighth, which was highlighted by Caipen's three-run double, and a run in the ninth put the Penguins ahead 12-7.
The Panthers scored three runs off Sellman in the ninth.
Gattozzi finished with three hits, three runs scored and three RBIs to lead YSU while Parks had two hits and two RBIs. Goetz went 4-for-6 with four RBIs and three runs scored for the Panthers.
Sellman improved to 3-0 for the Penguins, allowing five runs on three hits in three innings. Rob Brockel was charged with the loss for UWM, allowing all six runs in the eighth.
In the first game, Josh Page hit a leadoff single and scored on Diedrich's double in the first, but the Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the first on two sacrifice flies and Zak Rivera's homer.
The Panthers blew the game open with three runs in the eighth to go up 7-2 on a three-run homer from Brockel. Koehnlein and Diedrich had run-scoring hits for YSU in the ninth. Lucas Engle was tagged with the loss for YSU, allowing all seven runs in 7 2/3 innings. Aaron Sorenson allowed two runs on nine hits in seven innings to earn the win for UW-Milwaukee.

SALEM -- Wayne Maris, Bill Gaston, Matt Kufleitner, Ron Sanor, Kevin Baker, Doug Carli and Chuck Dickey were inducted into the Salem Area Bowling Association's Hall of Fame recently.
The event on April 9 was the association's fifth annual. It began as a night designed for a simple awards presentation to a ceremony including a dinner, featured speaker and presenters for each inductee.

U.S. women dominate Pacific Alliance meet
HONOLULU -- The U.S. women dominated the final day of the Pacific Alliance Gymnastics Championships.
Chellsie Memmel and Nastia Liukin each added a gold medal Saturday to their all-around titles, giving the U.S. team a total of seven gold and three silver for the three-day championships. The U.S. women won the team title ahead of Australia and Canada on Thursday.
The U.S. men's squad managed only two bronze medals. David Sender finished third on the vault and David Durante tied for the bronze in the parallel bars.
Reigning world champion Memmel won gold in the balance beam and finished second on the floor exercise, two days after tying Liukin for the overall crown. Memmel scored 15.700 on the beam, edging Liukin's 15.625.
