YSU to honor 4 as outstanding alumni



The honorees will be recognized at an April 27 banquet.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Four educators have been selected as this year's outstanding alumni by Youngstown State University's Beeghly College of Education.
They will be recognized at the fourth annual Outstanding Alumni Awards Banquet at 6:30 p.m. April 27 in the college's McKay Auditorium. Tickets are $40 each and must be reserved by Thursday by calling (330) 941-3215.
The recipients are:
Lifetime Achievement Award: James Hall of Canfield has been superintendent of South Range School District for 20 years and will retire at the end of this school year. He earned a bachelor's degree from YSU in 1965 and a master's from Kent State University in 1974. He served as superintendent in the Lowellville and Lordstown schools before moving to South Range.
Department of Teacher Education: Marie Viglio of Boardman has been a science teacher at St. Christine School for 27 years. Previous honors include a $23,000 Ohio Environmental Education Funds grant, the Governor's Award for Science Education, the Joule Award from the Ohio Energy Project and the Acker Science Teacher Award. She earned a bachelor's degree from YSU in 1978 and a master's from Mary Grove College in Detroit in 1997.
Counseling Department Award: Ron Marian of Youngstown has served as the executive director of the Mahoning County Mental Health Board since 1978. His efforts have led to the creation of the Drop In Center, Northeast Industries, Sojourner House and Substance Abuse/Mentally Ill Programming. He earned a bachelor's degree from YSU in 1963 and a master's from YSU in 1978.
Department of Educational Foundations, Research, Technology and Leadership: Charles Swindler of Canfield is superintendent of Western Reserve School District and previously was principal at Howland North Ridge Intermediate School. He is an instructor of school finance in YSU's education college and a member of the cabinet of the State Superintendents of Public Instruction. He earned his bachelor's degree from YSU in 1969 and has a master's from Westminster College.
