Trustees weigh architects' plans for libraries

YOUNGSTOWN -- With plans under way for two new library branches, the board of trustees of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is considering architects' proposals for the projects.
The trustees' building and sites committee will meet at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Austintown library's meeting room. The full board will meet at 4 p.m. April 27, also at that library.
Janet Loew, library communications and public relations director, said the board received proposals from 10 architects for design of new libraries on the city's South and East sides. The new libraries will replace current ones to meet shifts in population and the public's use of library branches, she said.
South library will be at Market Street and Midlothian Boulevard in the former Giant Eagle building, moving from several blocks north at 1771 Market, near Eagle Heights Academy.
East library's new location will be a new construction project at East High Avenue and Early Road. The East library is now at 6 N. Jackson St.
Loew said the building and sites committee will most likely arrive at a recommendation Tuesday to make to the full board at its special meeting.
She said the committee could recommend one architect for both projects or a separate architect for each project.
