Trustees to drop objection to liquor license

CANFIELD -- Canfield trustees have decided to withdraw an objection to a liquor license for a store in a new plaza.
Creekside Beverage will be an occupant of a plaza being built at state Route 46 and Shields Road.
Township voters passed a liquor option for carryout for the store in the November election.
The township had originally planned to object to the license on behalf of the Canfield School District, which owns 30 acres on Shields directly behind the new plaza site.
But the township sought a prosecutor's opinion after Trustee Bill Reese heard informally that the prosecutor's office thought the township's case was weak.
Entities such as schools, parks, libraries and churches within 500 feet of an establishment that plans to sell liquor have automatic grounds for an objection and can request a hearing with the Ohio Division of Liquor Control.
Political entities are also notified by the division and can also request hearings.
Trustee Randy Brashen said Friday that the prosecutor's office indicated that the township doesn't have much of a case because the property is empty.
The school district did not intend to formally object to the license, Reese said in January.
