YOUNGSTOWN -- Seventeen hundred schools, educators and percussionists from Ohio and Pennsylvania have been invited to attend the 2006 Ohio Day of Percussion, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. May 6. The event is sponsored by the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University, the YSU Percussion Federation and the Ohio Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society. It will be held in YSU's Kilcawley Center.
Guest artists and performers include: Ruben Alvarez, Latin percussion; Michael Burritt, marimba; Nathan Douds, jazz vibraphone improvisation with Dan Murphy on piano; Tom Freer, orchestral percussion; Mike McIntosh, marching percussion; John Riley, drumset, with Dave Morgan on bass, Dan Murphy, piano; Canfield High School percussion ensemble; Carlynton High School (Pa.) percussion ensemble; Eclipticalis Percussion Trio, Oberlin College; Findlay High School indoor drumline; Hilliard-Darby High School percussion group; Matrix indoor drumline, Akron; University of Akron Steel Drum Band; Dublin Coffman High School percussion ensemble; and Youngstown State University percussion ensemble, Dr. Glenn Schaft, director.
Special events include the high school snare drum, tenors and keyboard solo competition. Keith Aleo of Zildjian Cymbals will discuss the manufacturing process and assist with cymbal selection and sound identification. He will also discuss the legend and history behind the oldest continuous run family company in the United States.
The YSU SMARTS Drum Circles will host free 15-minute drum circles led by experienced facilitators throughout the day. Instruments will be provided. All ages and experience levels are welcome.
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Youngstown State University will provide a free one-hour guided tour.
