Summer camp to interest youths in engineering field

The camp is aimed at pupils in grades eight through 10.
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center is launching a pilot program aimed at encouraging young people to pursue careers in engineering.
There is a shortage of engineers in the United States, and MCCTC is placing an emphasis on programs offering engineering skills, said Dr. Roan Craig, superintendent.
The school will offer a precision machines one-week summer camp from June 12-16 to interested pupils in grades eight through 10.
The school's board of education approved the program this week.
The goal is to give children in that age group an opportunity to do some career exploration in precision machining necessary for manufacturing skills, Craig said.
The program is free but space is limited to just 10 pupils. However, should sufficient interest develop, additional weeklong sessions can be added, she said.
Applicants from Mahoning County will get first consideration, but pupils from Trumbull and Columbiana counties can be accepted if space permits, Craig said.
The camp will be taught by Richard Stape, the regular program teacher.
Craig said the camp will cost the school between $600 and $700 for materials. The school already has all of the necessary equipment in place, she said.
Interested pupils should call the school for enrollment information at (330) 729-4000.
