SOFTBALL Springfield blanks Ursuline



Junior Lyndsey Todor tied the West Branch record with 14 strikeouts.
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Krista Snyder (5-1) pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts and a walk Saturday to lead the Springfield High softball team to a 3-0 victory over Ursuline.
The Tigers (4-4) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Breanne Mincher singled and scored on a triple by Rebecca Evan, who scored on a single by Snyder.
Courtney Sheely hit a solo home run in the third inning.
Ashley Koval (4-4) of the Irish (7-6) scattered five hits with four strikeouts.
Poland 7-4, LaBrae 4-1
POLAND -- In the opener, winning pitcher Jenna Susany (4-1) sparked the Bulldogs (9-1) with a two-run double. Liz Maher earned a save and hit a RBI triple as did Allie Patton. All three had two hits.
For the Vikings (5-3), Liz Calderwood hit a two-run homer and Stepfanie Higgins drove in two runs with a double. Both had two hits.
In the second game, Maher (3-0) scattered six hits and contributed a two-run single. Patton's two hits included a triple and she scored twice.
For LaBrae, Lia Gordon had three singles and Calderwood homered.
Canfield 10, Walsh Jesuit 3
STOW -- The Cardinals' Lauren McGivern hit a triple and three singles. She also scored twice and stole a base. Melissa West hit two triples and scored twice while Tricia Bettura hit four singles and scored once.
Walsh is 12-2.
Stow 4, Canfield 1
STOW -- The Cardinals (6-1) were handed their first loss of the season by Stow (6-1).
McGivern hit a triple and single and drove in a run. Bettura hit a pair of singles.
Struthers 14, East Canton 1
HANOVERTON -- Brittany Bovo pitched a two-hitter and Halle Minchin-Skook had four hits including a double as Struthers rolled in the United Tournament.
Jeannette McLaughlin had a home run for the Wildcats (5-3). Sara Salinas, Bovo, Annie Grischow and Sam Ditman all added two hits for the winners.
United 10, Struthers 0
HANOVERTON -- United (8-1), behind the five-hit pitching of Jess Vincent, blanked Struthers in five innings in the United Tournament.
Brooke McCartney had three hits including a double and a triple while Erin Briceland and Megan McCartney added three hits each.
West Branch 11, East Canton 3
HANOVERTON -- Lyndsey Todor pitched a four-hitter while Bri Benedict had a double, single and two RBIs to lead West Branch in the United Tournament.
Todor (3-9) didn't issue any walks and bested Jessica Storsin (2-6) who pitched a five-hitter for five innings.
Benedict had a double, single and one RBI while Jen Cook and Brittany Snyder had two singles each.
United 7, West Branch 3
HANOVERTON -- United rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth inning to snap a 3-3 tied and subdue West Branch.
Todor (3-10) came up with 14 strikeouts to tie the school record.
Alisha Syk had a double, single and two RBIs while Ashley Erb had a single and two RBIs to lead United. Benedict had a triple, double and two RBIs to lead West Branch (3-10) while Becky Rinya had two singles and one RBI.
East Palestine 11-10, South Range 5-0
EAST PALESTINE -- Junior Chelsea Peterson had nine strikeouts and allowed just one walk during a six-hitter in the opener.
Also for East Palestine, senior Jen Yokley had a grand slam while sophomore Becky Hill hit a two-run homer.
Of South Range's six hits, Autumn Carter had a double and two singles.
In the second game, junior Allison McMillen tossed a one-hitter and didn't issue a walk, but East Palestine (11-2, 6-0 TCL) benefited from 14 walks.
The Raiders' lone hit was a second-inning single by Chelsea Leson. The Raiders fell to 1-8-1. Leson also pitched the first 4 1/3 innings in the five-inning game.
