Soap Box Derby registration set
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown-area young people ages 8 to 17 may register through May 31 for the Greater Youngstown Area Soap Box Derby.
The race here will be at 8 a.m. June 24 on Fifth Avenue, between Arlington and Rayen avenues.
The rain date is June 25.
Patty Postlethwait, derby director, said young people will compete for a qualifying spot at the All-American Soap Box Derby championships in Akron.
Volunteers and individual, organization and business sponsorships are needed for the local race, Postlethwait said.
She said the Youngstown race dates to 1934 when Youngstown was one of the original 34 cities in the nation to send a local champion to the All-American race. Since then, Youngstown has had many races, with this year's being the 19th.
She said officials of the All-American race in Akron consider Youngstown to be one of the premier race cities based on the organization of the race and the quality of cars that reach the championships.
